Sohrab Shahid Saless ( Sohrāb Shahǐd-Sāles ; born June 28, 1944 in Qazvin , † June 2, 1998 in Washington, DC ) was an Iranian director , screenwriter and dissident .

Life

In 1962, at the age of 18, he left Tehran for Vienna to study directing and dramaturgy . He later fell ill with tuberculosis and moved to Paris , where he continued to study. After his return to Iran, he made around 20 documentaries for the Iranian Ministry of Culture, including some about the “ White Revolution ” of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and the technical progress that came to Iran. In 1971 he received a gold medal at the Tehran Festival. He received several international awards for the feature film A Simple Event . In 1974 Saless left Iran as an opponent of the Shah's regime. Many of his feature films received international recognition. Tabiate Bijan / Stillleben , his last Persian film, was awarded the “Silver Bear” at the 1974 Berlin Film Festival . The films he made in the period that followed earned him the highest level of recognition. In 1981 he was awarded for Grabbe last summer the Adolf Grimme Prize in Gold for best production (along with Thomas Valentin for the script and Wilfried Grimpe as a performer). He used his favorite author Anton Chekhov as a model for his films . His often dark films tell of loneliness, oppression and suffering. There were never pleasing or fashionable patterns. The rhythm refused to allow the comfortable reception. They depict seemingly simple, everyday events that are made exemplary by calm, precise images.

Saless threatened to be deported several times : "The residence permit does not replace the work permit" was stamped on his passport . After the modest success of Utopia, he moved to the ČSSR . There he made his film Hans - A Boy from Germany , which is based on the novel The Blue Hour by Hans Frick . Later he shot roses for Africa . His last film in Germany was made in 1991 in collaboration with ZDF . He wrote the script for it in his quiet hours in Oldenburg , where Saless liked to withdraw. Eventually he emigrated to Chicago, USA , and died in Washington DC in 1998
