The Sokolica is a mountain in the Polish Middle Pieninen , a mountain range of the Pieninen , with 747 meters in the Pieninki . The peak is about 350 meters above the Dunajec valley . A mountain of the same name is located in the Saybuscher Beskids .
Location and surroundings
The Sokolica lies in the main ridge of the Pieninen. To the south and east of the summit is the Dunajec Gorge , to the north is the Krośnica Valley . The Sokola Perć (falcon path), named after the Orla Perć ( eagle path ) in the High Tatras , leads to the Sokolica summit .
etymology
The Polish name Sokolica comes from the birds that nest near the summit and can be translated as Falkenberg or Falkengipfel .
Flora and fauna
The Sokolica has a colorful flora and fauna. It is almost entirely covered with mixed forest. Only the rugged rocks protrude above the treetops. There are no mountain meadows on the Sokolica. Numerous birds of prey, especially the falcons from which it is named, nest in the rocks of the Sokolica. The mountain lies in the Pieninen National Park .
Ascents
Unlike the Tatra Mountains, the Pienines did not glaciate in the last ice ages. In the Pieninen there are therefore human traces that go back to the Paleolithic. It is very likely that the peaks were already climbed at this time, as the ascent is not particularly difficult.
tourism
The view from Sokolica is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the whole of the Carpathian Mountains. The numerous loops of the Dunajec in the Dunajec breakthrough can be observed from the summit. You can also see the often snow-capped peaks of the High Tatras . The view is especially beautiful in early autumn, when the slopes of the Pieninki covered with mixed forest change color and there is already snow in the Tatra Mountains. It is therefore popular with tourists. The summit is easily accessible from all villages in the east of the Piennen on marked hiking trails. Because of the risk of falling, a railing is attached to the summit.
The broken branch
On September 6, 2018, a young woman had an accident on the rocky summit. A helicopter, which circled twice over the scene of the accident but was not used, was also called for a rescue operation. The upper branch of the famous Sokolica pine, which is over 500 years old, was torn off by the air force generated.
