The Middle Pieninen (Polish: Pieniny Środkowe ), also called the actual Pieninen (Polish: Pieniny Właściwe ), are a mountain range in the Pieninen mountain range in the Polish Lesser Poland Voivodeship in the Powiat Tatrzański district and the communities of Czorsztyn and Krościenko nad Dunajcem . Often the middle pienins are imprecisely referred to as pienins. In addition to the Middle Pienines, the Pieninen mountain range also includes the Spis Pienines and the Little Pienines, as well as the Gorlica massif in Slovakia, which is partly considered to be part of the Little Pienines and partly as an independent mountain range in the Pienines.
location
The mountains are located north of the Spis Magura (the border is the Dunajec Gorge ), south of the Gorce (the border is the Krośnica Valley ), west of the Small Pienines (the border is the Dunajec Gorge) and east of the Spis Pieninen (the border is the reservoirs Czorsztyn and Jezioro Sromowskie ), the hills of the Pieniny . It has the character of a low mountain range . The highest point is the Trzy Korony , more specifically the Okrąglica peak, at 982 meters .
The Middle Pienines are divided into the mountain ranges:
- the Czorsztyn Pienines in the west
- the three-crown massif in the middle
- the Pieninki in the east
geology
The Middle Pienines consist largely of limestone from the Jura. Fissured limestone rocks can be found throughout the mountain range. The Dunajec made two breakthroughs through the Middle Pieniny. The dam of the Jezioro Czorsztyńskie was built in the higher breakthrough between the Spiš and the Middle Pienines. It has therefore been flooded since 1997 and is located below the surface of the reservoir. The second breakthrough, about eight kilometers long, is located downstream and forms one of the most spectacular canyons in Europe.
nature
The mountains have a rich flora and fauna. It is entirely within the Pienine National Park .
tourism
The Middle Pienines are densely populated and developed for tourism. There is a dense network of marked hiking trails in the national park; the blue-marked hiking trail over the main ridge and the Pieninenweg along the Dunajec , as well as a three-crown hut below the Trzy Korony at the beginning of the breakthrough , are particularly popular . The raft trips through the Dunajec Canyon, dating back to the 16th century, are particularly popular. White water kayaking and rafting in the canyon are also popular.
