Sommer-Rebellen (international, English-language title Summer Rebels ) is a German- Slovak film for children and young people by Martina Saková , which is due to premiere at the 60th Zlín Film Festival in September 2020.

It's finally summer and eleven-year-old Jonas is looking forward to spending the holidays with his grandfather Bernard in Slovakia, because after the death of his father there is only trouble at home. But after Grandma's death, his grandfather is no longer as Jonas remembers him. Early retirement also made him moody.

From the hoped-for time full of fun and action nothing is noticeable for a few days, but when Jonas befriends the neighbor's daughter Alex, the two come up with a crazy plan. A new wife, a new job or a new hobby should cheer up his grandpa.

It is in summer rebels to Martina Sakovás directorial debut in a feature film, also wrote with Sülke Schulz the script. The film shows parallels with Saková's life, as her father died when she was 11 years old. Saková, who comes from Slovakia, studied at the film school in Bratislava, later as a visiting student at the University of the Arts in Berlin and at the Babelsberg Film University Konrad Wolf in Potsdam, and was a screenwriter for the children's films Amálka , I'm Going Crazy , the animation film Heavy Mental and the documentary Little Hanoi . She has lived and worked in Berlin for 17 years, where she founded the animation studio and film production company Projector23, with which she realized summer rebels .

The film received production funding of EUR 435,000 from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, EUR 315,000 from the Slovak Audiovisual Fund and EUR 285,000 from the Board of Trustees for Young German Films, along with an early project development grant of EUR 15,000. Creative Europe Media contributed a project development grant of 30,000 euros.

The young actor Eliás Vyskocil took over the leading role from Jonas. Pavel Nový , one of the most famous actors in the Czech Republic, plays his grandfather Bernard. Liana Pavlíková took on the role of Alex, the Slovak-Hungarian actress and chansonnière Szidi Tobias plays Frau Blumig, and Kaya Marie Möller can be seen in the role of Jonas' mother.

The shooting took place on 38 days from mid-July to early September 2018 in Germany and Slovakia. The film was shot in the forest and on a lake between Pretzien and Dannigkow , a district of Gommern near Magdeburg, where all the lake scenes were shot. Further recordings were made in the “Gare de la lune” ballroom in Dresden and in Handlová in Slovakia. Jieun Yi , who comes from South Korea and has lived in Berlin for 15 years , was the camerawoman , where she studied camera and most recently worked with Xaver Böhm on the film O Beautiful Night .

Pierre Peters-Arnolds and Karin Lehmann acted as dubbing directors . Young speaker Heinrich Bruderek lends Jonas his voice in the German version, Roland Hemmo speaks to his grandfather Bernard and Zoe Murmann Alex.

The worldwide distribution rights are with Pluto Films, in Slovakia and the Czech Republic with CinémArt and in Germany with Farbfilm Verleih. The first international screening of the film is planned for September 6, 2020 at the Zlín Film Fest. Also in September 2020, the film will be shown in the cinema as part of the children's media festival Goldener Spatz in Gera and Erfurt. The film was shown in selected cinemas in Slovakia from August 13, 2020, here under the title Letní rebeli .
