Sommerkoog

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Sommerkoog even summer polders or occasionally summer Groden called, is a only by a summer dike protected floodplains . Examples include a. the former Blomen-Sommerkoog , the Nordgrovener Sommerkoog , the Preiler Sommerkoog , the Neue Meldorfer Sommerkoog , the Wöhrdener Sommerkoog from 1854 and the Sommergroden in front of the Langwarder Groden . The summer dyke usually protects against flooding in the summer months, so that during this time the Koog , Polder or Groden (these three terms arede facto synonyms that are only used regionally differently) can be used as pasture for cattle or in particular for sheep or for haymaking . At the same time, they serve to protect the coast , as they absorb part of the force of the waves during storm surges , reducing the strength and height of the surf, which relieves the main dike.

In the past, in addition to the agricultural use , the reclamation of new land by diking several Sommerköge by means of a newly built winter dike to a new Koog or polder was the main reason for the construction of Sommerkögen or polders. This function has ceased to exist due to the inclusion in the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea , Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea and Hamburg Wadden Sea National Parks , which are now part of the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site .

In the meantime, the protection of flora and fauna in the salt marshes that have not been diked is much more important than the development of new agricultural land, so that practically no new summer polders or polders are diked. While some Sommerköge in the course of coastal protection projects such as the Barlter Sommerkoog in the Meldorfer Bucht or the Hauener Hooge near Greetsiel were made "land-proof" during the construction of the Leyhörn by means of an upstream main dike, the summer dike was partially or completely removed in other places the surfaces can be renatured again through regular flooding and the associated salt input . One example is the renaturation of the Langeooger Sommerpolder . As further examples for the dismantling of existing summer dykes are u. a. Measures at the Lütetsbruger Sommerpolder , the Sommergroden / -Polder before Cappel-Neufeld in the state of Wursten / Lower Saxony or at Langwarder Groden ( Butjadingen peninsula ) should be mentioned.

Occasionally, areas inland along rivers that are designated as floodplains are officially referred to as "summer polders". This designation is misleading because floods on rivers are not limited to certain times of the year. It would make more sense here to use the term over- / flooding polder .
