Summer Sunday is a ten-minute German short film by Fred Breinersdorfer and Sigi Kamml . Awarded the most successful German short film in 2008, the film with Axel Prahl in the leading role was given the title “particularly valuable”. At the core of the plot is the dilemma of accepting the death of one person in order to save the lives of several people, a so-called trolley problem .

Carson W. Stout's short story "Midstate Bridge" was the inspiration for this and two other short films: The Bridge (1978) and Most (2003).

action

Bruno Hansen is the bridge master at the Rethe lift bridge in Hamburg . He makes sure that the lift bridge is down when a train passes and that it is up when a ship passes.

"My ex didn't pick him up again!" - he says to his colleague Richard that morning and explains why he has his deaf son Micha with him. Armed with pen and paper and his father's cap, Micha goes outside to paint a picture. Meanwhile, his father is struggling with a power outage. The bridge is up, but a train is approaching. A gust of wind made his father's cap fall on a small ledge. Micha climbs after her. “The bridge must be completely closed 3 minutes before the train arrives. Everything according to plan, ”recalls Bruno Hansen. But then he sees his son under the bridge, doomed because he cannot hear his father's warning calls.

Now Bruno Hansen has to decide: will he sacrifice 293 passengers and leave the bridge up or will he sacrifice the life of his child and close the bridge? He lowers the bridge. His son Micha dies.
