Sound of the Sky ( Japanese ソ ・ ラ ・ ノ ・ ヲ ・ ト , So Ra No Wo To ) is an anime TV series from 2010 directed by Mamoru Kambe . The series was produced by A-1 Pictures and Aniplex and is also the debut project of Anime no Chikara , a merger of TV Tokyo and Aniplex. At about the same time, the publication of a manga adaptation that was drawn by Yagi Shimba and started in the January 2010 issue of the comic Dengeki Daiō began.

action

At the center of the action, which takes place in a post-apocalyptic world in which humanity has been thrown back to the state of the 20th century, is the young girl Kanata Sorami, who was left alone due to a war. At that time she came across a trumpet player, which inspired her to join the military and become a trumpet player herself. However, the clumsy girl's arts are very modest. Finally, the military assigns her a new location. So it happened that she was assigned to the 1121st train in the city of Seize (with Cuenca as a model). There, Rio Kazumiya tries to teach her to play as her new boss.

So Kanata first experiences the hard life as a soldier, but soon has mostly fun dealing with her new friends. Little by little, she improves herself playing the trumpet and, together with the other four soldiers of the troop, she experiences various adventures that increasingly reveal the sad history that has led to the current state of affairs, a world thrown back in time. Some of the girls are still grappling with memories from the past that they find difficult to process. Nevertheless Kanata manages to settle most problems through her loving manner and they become very close friends who hardly remember a move and treat each other as equals.

Later, however, the conflict came to a head again when the peace talks with the Roman Empire dragged on, but they were not accepted by everyone and consciously aimed at a renewed confrontation. The 1121st train plays a key role in this. After all, Rio is of royal blood and can bring the peace talks to a successful conclusion, while Kanata, Kureha, Noël and Felicia manage to delay the renewed confrontation long enough with the restored archaic spider-like tank Takemikazuchi , so that the attempt to overshadow the peace talks , is foiled.

Characters

Soldier Kanata Sorami ( 空 深 彼方 , Sorami Kanata )
Kanata is a 15 year old girl and the signalist and loader of the train. In her young childhood, Kanata was left alone and lost both her home and her parents. However, she found courage when she watched a soldier play the trumpet, and made up her mind to become a trumpet player. So she later joined the military under circumstances that were not exactly clarified in order to learn to play the trumpet. As the main character of the series, she is portrayed as a nice, but also cocky girl who quickly causes problems for herself. Although she has severe problems playing her instrument, which is commented on by the local residents with sentences such as "That wakes even the dead", she has perfect pitch and can immediately assign the appropriate notes to sounds.
OFw Rio Kazumiya ( 和 宮 梨 旺 , Kazumiya Rio )
Rio is the train's 17-year-old signalist. Despite her supposed role model role, she also has a number of weaknesses. So she suffers a lot from the loss of her mother and takes care of Kanata very intensively - almost as if it were her own child. Rio also teaches her to play the trumpet. She has a good relationship with Felicia Heidemann, although the two of them didn't like each other in their early stages. A characteristic for them is to regularly have bad luck at draws, as already indicated in the opening credits.
Lt Felicia Heidemann ( フ ィ リ シ ア ・ ハ イ デ マ ン , Firishia Haideman )
The 18-year-old is the leader of the train and tank commander, but doesn't care about the ranking and calls everyone by their first name. Likewise, she doesn't shy away from doing the dirty work too. Although she is a very calm leader, she is easy to get scared of, but most of the characters on the platoon do.
Soldier Kureha Suminoya ( 墨 埜 谷 暮 羽 , Suminoya Kureha )
At 14 years of age, she is the youngest of the train, of the rank of soldier and the gunner of the tank. She has the typical characteristics of a Tsundere and tries to see the train as organized and strict. However, she has to admit that her unit is little known and is regularly ignored by the military.
Uffz Noël Kannagi ( 寒 凪 乃 絵 留 , Kannagi Noeru )
The 15-year-old is the tank driver and mechanic. She usually spends most of her time trying to fix the inoperable tank, but is missing important parts. Accordingly, she is extremely tired during the day and regularly falls asleep in the most unusual places or during a conversation. She is very taciturn and has a hard time developing relationships with other people. This is because she is a genius and was taken advantage of by the military as a child to bring an archaic bio-weapons factory back into operation.

Conception

A north bush owl , a motif that recurs frequently in the anime.

Sora no Woto makes use of numerous elements from different cultures. The nation of Helvetia, to which the 1121st train belongs, is represented as French-speaking. Archaic artifacts such as old books and steles, but also mostly the names of the residents, are written in Japanese, a language that hardly any of the residents can understand and whose characters are simply referred to as ideograms . Helvetia describes the opposing nation as Roma and calls itself the Roman Empire in its own language, German. An ever again aufgegriffenes motive is in South African -based Regions northern white-faced owl ( Ptilopsis leucotis ), the anime both as pets and as an emblem occurs and reflects the typical for her behavior. Shortly before the series was produced, a video from a Japanese television program had become known that discussed the owl's protective mechanism against potential enemies.

The opening credits of the series used numerous illustrations in the style of the works of Gustav Klimt , in which, as previously in Elfen Lied by the same director as Sora no Woto , the characters appearing were replaced by the characters of the anime.

Origin and publications

Sora no Woto was created as the debut production of Anime no Chikara , a merger of the Anime division of TV Tokyo and Aniplex . The aim of this project should be to bring together a group of creative people in order to not produce anime television series based on other works. The anime was animated by Studio A-1 Pictures . Directed by Mamoru Kambe , who had previously written works such as Elfen Lied , Baccano! or Cardcaptor Sakura coordinated. The original design of the characters was created by Mel Kishida and adapted to the needs of an anime by Toshifumi Akai . The script was written by Hiroyuki Yoshino , who based the plot on the concept of Paradores.

The twelve episodes of the series were broadcast for the first time from January 5 to March 23, 2010 (after midnight and thus on the previous television day ) on the Japanese television station TV Tokyo . A few days later, the broadcasters AT-X , TV Aichi and TV Osaka also began broadcasting. Two other episodes were only released on DVD and BD.

The series was licensed in Europe by Beez Entertainment , whose DVDs with German localization under the title Sounds of the Skies were distributed via Al! Ve from June 2011.

The plot as well as the original concept for the anime comes from Paradores. In the magazine published by ASCII Media Works , the manga was first printed in the January 2010 issue of November 2009.
