Sorbian Franconian

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sorbian Franconian is an old name for a dialect in Thuringia and a small part of Bavaria which is now called Southeast Thuringian , at least in Thuringia . The term Sorbian Franconian was used around the middle of the 20th century. This Thuringian-Upper Saxon dialect has many characteristics of East Franconian and was therefore often assigned to the East Franconian dialects and thus to Upper German until around the middle of the 20th century . It can be found in older literature as an alternative to designation Sorbs Fränkisch the terms Saale Franconian and Elster Fränkisch which divide the dialect area also.

Historical background

As part of the process of the German East Settlement , the Main Franconian settlement stream following the Main and its tributaries upstream penetrated east of the Thuringian-Franconian low mountain range in a north-easterly direction into the Saale Valley and mixed with the eponymous Sorbs resident there and the Thuringians advancing from the north-west . Further to the east, this stream of settlements penetrated into the eastern Ore Mountains , so that there and in the Vogtland in between still partly dominant influences of the East Franconian can be found.
