Sorcerer is a Swedish epic doom band from Stockholm , which was formed in 1988, disbanded in 1992 and has been active again since 2010.
history
The band was formed in 1988 and consisted of bassist Johnny Hagel, drummer Tommy Karlsson and guitarist Peter Furulid. In 1989 the singer Anders Engberg and Mats Liedholm joined the line-up as the second guitarist. In the same year the group recorded their first demo in Anno 1503 , of which 1,500 copies were sold. The band also played two gigs in Stockholm, the first with Count Raven and the second at a festival with groups like Entombed , this being the first show the band called themselves Entombed, Carnage , Therion and Mezzrow . In the same year the sampler Rockbox was also released , on which Sorcerer can be heard with the song Born with Fire . In 1990 Rickard Evensand joined the line-up as the new drummer. In 1992 Sorcerer recorded their second demo The Inquisition , which includes a demo version of the Rainbow song Stargazer . Later that year, Hagel left the band to join Tiamat . Shortly thereafter, Sorcerer was dissolved. According to Hagel, his departure was not the reason for the band breakup, but the lack of motivation and lack of time of the remaining band members. In 1995, John Perez of Solitude Aeternus decided to publish both demos as a compilation on his label Brainticket Records . This was the first release from Brainticket Records. Perez and Hagel had known each other since the first Sorcerer demo.
In 2010 Johnny Hagel was contacted by Oliver Weinsheimer from the German Hammer of Doom Festival . This offered the band a place at the festival. In addition to Hagel and Engberg, Sorcerer now consisted of friends of the two. Kristian Niemann and Ola Englund played the electric guitars and Robert Iversen the drums. In 2011, Perez re-released the demos, which had been remastered. This includes the three previously unreleased songs Wisdom , Northern Seas and At Dawn as a bonus . In the same year the band played at the Up the Hammers Festival in Athens . In addition, work began on the debut album. In 2012 Englund left the band to join Six Feet Under . Peter Hallgren joined in as a replacement. In the following period, the band continued to work on the album before the recorded material was mixed and mastered by drummer Robert Iversen. The album was mastered by Jens Bogren before it was released on Metal Blade Records in 2015 under the name In the Shadow of the Inverted Cross .
style
According to Nadine Fiebig in Nuclear Blast Magazine , Sorcerer is relatively unknown compared to other Epic Doom bands such as Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus, which is due to the low number of publications and the long inactivity. Occasionally you can hear the songs on In the Shadow of the Inverted Cross Power Metal parallels like King Diamond 's. On the album you can also hear a "haunting voice" and "grave-sounding guitars". Sorcerer's music is also described in the book The Ultimate Hard Rock Guide Vol I - Europe as Epic Doom in the style of Solitude Aeturnus. Janne Stark also drew in his book The Heaviest Encyclopedia of Swedish Hard Rock and Heavy Metal Ever! a comparison to Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus, but referred to the music as progressive Doom Metal . In an interview with Patrick Schmidt from Rock Hard , Johnny Hagel stated that in addition to Solitude Aeturnus, Candlemass, Saint Vitus and Black Sabbath , traditional heavy metal is also one of the influences. Boris Kaiser stated in the review of the album in the same issue that you can hear influences from Solitude Aeturnus and Candlemass. The basis of the songs is classic Doom Metal, but you can also hear influences of hard rock and heavy metal. In addition, they adore Rainbow, as did Veni Domine , especially on the album Fall Babylon Fall . Scandinavian melodic and power metal are also processed, as is also the case with Memory Garden and Memento Mori . Sorcerer also recalled Black Sabbath at the time of Headless Cross several times . Frank Albrecht from Deaf Forever describes the music as Epic Doom for Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus admirers, who does not just copy it but instead sets his own accents. Because of the demos, the band has a "reputation like Donnerhall".
