Sorsum is a village in the municipality of Wennigsen (Deister) in the Hanover region .

history

Sorsum was first mentioned in a document as a Sutherem, probably in a deed of gift to Bishop Siegeward zu Minden. This is not dated, historians estimate its date of origin on the basis of the witnesses given as 1124 to 1130. However, a document with the donation of the local chapel to the Wennigsen monastery can be reliably dated to 1226 , the name given was "Sutheren".

During the Thirty Years' War, Sorsum was badly damaged, similar to the nearby Wennigsen. The population was at least halved from 174 people (documented for 1585) to 84 in 1641. Sources show that the Peace of Westphalia was proclaimed in a thanksgiving service by the then Pastor August Rettberg. In 1673, almost the entire place burned down in one night in the week after Easter. Only the chapel and two other houses were spared. An annual memorial service reminded of this until 1890.

As part of the territorial reform, Sorsum became part of the Wennigsen (Deister) municipality in 1970. The incorporation took place through a resolution of the Wennigsen Act by the Lower Saxony state parliament on January 1, 1970.

politics

Sorsum is part of the Wennigsen (Deister) community and has a local council. Thomas Butterbrodt ( SPD ) has been the local mayor since 2016 .

coat of arms

The coat of arms shows a shield split in red and silver. On the left you can see two leopards growing out of the gap, on the right a red bishop's staff. The colors red and silver stand for the diocese colors of Minden. These are also the national colors today, reinforced by the Guelph leopard. The crosier also reminds of Minden's role in founding the town.
