Sotajumala (German: god of war , warlord ) is a Finnish death metal band from Jyväskylä .

The group's texts are written in Finnish and mostly deal with the topic of “war”. The music style is technically adept Death Metal in the style of American groups, which is why the band is often compared to Morbid Angel in reviews .

Band history

Sotajumala was founded in 1998 by Tomi Otsala and Kosti Orbinski after the two heard about Deicide . In 2000 the line-up was completed by Pete Lapio, Harri Lastu, Jyrki Häkkinen and Arttu Romo, whereupon the band recorded a demo with 4 songs in the Sundicoop Studios in mid-September 2001 . The demo named after the band was pressed in an edition of 200 and distributed from October 1, 2001. The band then signed a contract with Woodcut Records.

A short time later the guitarist Pete Lapio left the band. In the summer of 2002 he was followed by the singer Harri Lasu, who was then replaced by Teijo Hakkola, whose nickname "105" stands for the length of the Winter War . In autumn 2002 Sotajumala began recording four more songs in Studio Watercastle, which were processed into the EP Panssarikolonna (German Panzer Column ) and mastered by Mika Jussila in Finnvox Studios . On February 15, 2003, the EP Panssarikolonna was released by Woodcut Records in an edition of 1,500 pieces. In the weeks after the release, drummer Arttu Romo and guitarist Jyrki Häkkinen left the band, whereupon Timo Häkkinen was recruited as session drummer. With him and Pete Lapio, who returned to the band in the summer, the first album was recorded in August 2003, which was made under the direction of Sami Kokko in Sam's workshop. Mika Jussila took over the mastering again. On March 24, 2004, Woodcut released their debut album under the name Death Metal Finland .

The release was followed by a tour of the Nordic countries with Rotten Sound and Defleshed and an appearance at the Nummirock Festival. On August 12, 2004 session drummer Timo Häkkinen became a permanent member of the band, but Teijo Hakkola was fired. For him, Mynni Luukkainen came to the band as a session singer, who also works for the black metal band Horna under the pseudonym "Infection". In the spring of 2005, Sotajumala played as opening act for Grave at three concerts .

In July 2005 Sotajumala recorded a split EP with the befriended death metal band Torture Killer , which was released on October 12, 2005 on Woodcut. The EP was released on CD and 7 " vinyl and entered the Finnish singles charts at number 10 in the week of its release. Luukkainen was accepted into the band as a permanent singer in the summer of that year. The line-up has remained stable since then.

In July 2007, with the support of Sami Koivisto and Kai Hahto, the recording of the second album began. On September 26, the single Kuolinjulistus was pre-released. The band also shot their first music video about her. On October 24, 2007, the album Teloitus was finally released in Scandinavia and Finland, where it entered the Finnish album charts at number 17. A second video for the song Oikeutus was shot. In the months that followed, the band toured with Nile and Deathchain , among others , supported Obituary and performed at the Finnish Metal Expo, the Tuska Festival, Pellavarock and Jalometalli. In June 2008 the album was also released in the rest of Europe and North America. In addition, in January 2008 the first CD Death Metal Finland was reissued as a special edition.

In January 2009 the band announced that they had separated from their label and were now under contract with Cobra Records.

In March 2010 the first DVD Slaughter at Lutakko was released . It shows live recordings of a concert on October 10, 2010 at Club Lutakko in Jyväskylä , where Sotajumala performed together with Survivors Zero , whose show can also be seen on DVD. At the end of April 2010, the band released a split EP with the Finnish thrash metal band Deathchain. Each of the bands contributed their own song and cover of Iron Maiden . Sotajumala was able to win over Paul Di'Anno , the singer of Iron Maiden at the time, as a guest singer for her cover version of Prowler . With Deathchains Purgatory Tommi Salmela helped out from Tarot . The EP entered the Finnish charts at number 6.

On May 26, 2010 the third studio album Kuolemanpalvelus was released in Finland. The album reached number 6 on the Finnish charts.

The band then worked on their fourth album Raunioissa for several years without great pressure . On September 15, 2014, the recording with producer Sami Koivisto began . The band decided to release the album as a self-release because they couldn't find a record company. The album could therefore be pre-ordered via the Mailorder Record Shop X and Bandcamp . The album was finally released on January 16, 2015 and was available through all download and streaming platforms such as Spotify , Deezer , iTunes , Google Play and Rdio . The work paid off, as the album reached number four on the Finnish charts, the highest ranking for the band. Still, the album turned into a financial disaster for the band. So far they have only managed to recover 85% of the costs. The band also had problems with the aggregator and took the album off the market in January 2016. It is currently only available through Bandcamp.
