Soul Coughing was an American alternative rock / electro band from New York . Although the band was never able to celebrate its great mainstream success, from its formation in 1992 until its dissolution in 2000 it was always in the favor of music critics and was able to create a larger fan base in the underground .

history

Mike Doughty , who later became the front man of Soul Coughing, worked at the Knitting Factory , a New York music club specializing in jazz and experimental music. Here he also got to know the later musicians of Soul Coughing. He met Mark De Gli Antoni, who had just graduated from Mannes College of Music with a degree in composition and who focused on sampling . One day Doughty De Gli brought Antoni CDs (by Raymond Scott , Carl Stalling, Howlin 'Wolf and The Andrews Sisters , among others ) to collect. These samples in connection with De Gli Antoni's own compositions and Doughty's distinctive, half spoken, half sung vocal lines formed the musical foundation of Soul Coughing. The band had their first appearance under the name “M. Doughty's Soul Coughing ”on June 15, 1992 at the Knitting Factory . Sebastian Steinberg on bass and Yuval Gabay, who had already worked with John Zorn on drums, completed the band as other musicians . In 1993 Soul Coughing's concert poster featured “Deep Slacker Jazz” as the headline. This term, based on The Who's “Maximum R&B”, was retained by the band as a description of their musical style until they were dissolved.

The band was signed within a year by Slash Records , a London Records sub-label that distributed its records through Warner Bros. in the United States, where they released three albums: Ruby Vroom (1994), Irresistible Bliss (1996) and El Oso (1998). Sebastian Steinberg received the Gibson Guitar Award in New York in March 1998. After the band broke up, the album Lust in Phaze - the Best of Soul Coughing was released on Rhino Records in 2002 .

style

Soul Coughing's style is a mixture of jazz , funk , hip-hop and rock music , which resulted in a distinct, independent style that frontman Mike Doughty himself described with the new word “ Deep Slacker Jazz ”.

Use of music in pop culture

Despite their - for the American market - not that great commercial success (150,000 records of their debut album sold and 250,000 of the successor Irresistible Bliss ), some songs were known to a larger audience. This was because various filmmakers used Soul Coughing's songs as film music:

  • Is Chicago, Is Not Chicago from the album Ruby Vroom can be heard on the soundtrack for the film " Tommy Boy - Through Dick and Thin " (1995).
  • The film " Batman & Robin " used the title The Bug (1997).
  • The soundtrack to the film “ Spawnfeatures the title A Plane Scraped It's Belly On A Sooty Yellow Moon , a collaboration between Soul Coughing and the well-known drum and bass producer Roni Size (1997).
  • The song Rolling made it into the Betty Boop - "music video" of the "Groovies" series by Cartoon Network , as well as on the soundtrack of the Australian film " Candy " (2006).
  • Circles was also featured in the "Groovies" series as background music for the Flinstones cartoon video.
  • Unmarked Helicopters appears on both the X- Files tie-in album “Songs in the Key of X” (1996) and the fourth season episode “Max” (1997). 16 Horses appeared in the film of the same name for the series (1998)
  • The title Disseminated can be heard in a European advertisement for the Ford Transit (2006).
  • Sugar Free Jazz can be heard in an episode of the US series " Malcolm in the Middle ".
  • In 2004 Circles appeared in the film " Walking Tall ". The FOX series "Undeclared" also used the single in its first episode.
  • In the Playstation game " Gran Turismo 2 " the player hears Super Bon Bon .
  • In episode 16, season 5 of the series Dr. House can hear the song for $ 300
  • In episode 2, season 6 of the series The Blacklist the song "Super Bon Bon" can be heard

The dissolution and after

In March 2000, the band officially announced their breakup. Although the press release on their website http://soulcoughing.com mentioned an amicable separation, there appeared to have been several problems among the individual members. In addition, Mike Doughtys was addicted to heroin at the time, who after 2000 was no longer in contact with the other former band members. In addition, the individual artists wanted to devote themselves more intensively to their solo projects.

  • Mike Doughty has been a solo artist since the band split up and has released several records:
    • Skittish (LP, 2000)
    • Rockity Roll (EP, 2003)
    • Skittish / Rockity Roll (Re-Release, 2004)
    • Haughty Melodic (LP, 2005)
    • Golden Delicious (LP, 2008)
    • Yes and also yes (LP, 2011)
  • Mark De Gli Antoni
    • devoted himself to the composition of film music, a. a. Cherish and Marie & Bruce
    • released the LP Horse Tricks in 1999

Others

  • The album's namesake, Ruby Vroom, was Ruby Froom, the daughter of the album's producer. The Israeli-born Yuval Gabay provided the album title with his pronunciation of the name.
  • The album title Irresistible Bliss is a reference to Mike Doughty's favorite Prince Irresistible Bitch song , which was released on the B-side in 1983.
  • El Oso is Spanish and means "The Bear". The name comes from a habit of Sebastian Steinberg, who always wanted a bear on his setlist .
  • According to Mark De Gli Antonis, the band name comes from a poem by Mike Doughty about Neil Young throwing up on his bus. Since a friend of Doughty's had used the term “soul coughing” for “ throwing up” , Doughty adapted it in his poem.
