The South African Orienteering Federation (abbreviated SAOF ) is the national Orienteering Association of South Africa . It was founded in 1983 and has been a member of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF) since 1992 . The association is a member of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC).

history

After the first orienteering events in 1981 in Cape Town and 1982 in Johannesburg and the first orienteering clubs in South Africa, the SAOF was founded in 1983. In the same year, the first South African championships were held near Cape Town, which have taken place annually since then. Due to the apartheid prevailing in South Africa , the SAOF was not accepted into the world association IOF. Only after the political change in the early 1990s was the SAOF incorporated in 1992. The following year, athletes from South Africa competed in the World Orienteering Championships for the first time in the United States .

societies

There are currently (as of 2013) eight orienteering clubs in South Africa. Four of them, namely the Adventure Racing Club , RAC Orienteers , Rand Orienteering Club and the Wits Orienteering Club are located in Johannesburg. The Peninsula Orienteering Club and UCTMSC come from Cape Town . The Tukkies Orienteering Club is based in Pretoria , the Durban Orienteering Club in Durban .
