Orienteering USA is the national orienteering umbrella organization of the United States . The association was founded on August 1, 1971 and was called the United States Orienteering Federation (USOF) until August 2010 .

history

The USOF was founded on August 1, 1971. The first competitions in this sport on the American were organized between 1941 and 1943 by the Finnish officer Piltti Heiskanen. The first known public orienteering took place on November 5, 1967 in Valley Forge , Pennsylvania. The compass manufacturer Björn Kjellström , who was one of the co-founders of the USOF in 1971 , also had a significant influence on orienteering in the United States . In 1973 the USOF was accepted into the International Orienteering Federation (IOF).
