South Heights is a small community in Beaver County , Pennsylvania . The town, formerly known as Ethels Landing or Shannopin, is about 30 km from Pittsburgh . In 2010, 475 people lived there.
geography
South Heights is on the south bank of the Ohio River . The community on the land side is almost completely surrounded by Hopewell Township , only in the southwest it borders on Crescent Township . Ambridge is on the opposite side of the river .
history
The first houses were built in South Heights in the 19th century. The settlement was named Ethels Landing after the local post office . In 1879, with the opening of the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad , the place received a train station . The railway company named the station Shannopin, the name goes back to an ancient American tribe. In the 1880s, oil and natural gas were found in the area and the settlement continued to grow. In 1909 a separate community ( borough ) was founded. The name of the settlement in South Heights was changed to avoid confusion.
