The social building and bath house Mainstrasse 169 of the former tar paint factory Oehler and the later industrial park Clariant in Offenbach am Main is a single cultural monument due to the Hessian Monument Protection Act . The building was constructed from 1908 to 1910 by the Swiss architect and town planner Hans Bernoulli .

Geographical location

The address at which the former social building and bath house of the Teerfarbenwerk Oehler is run (Mainstrasse 169) is the old company address and does not match its actual location. It is on Friedhofstrasse at the corner of Mühlheimer Strasse.

history

Karl Gottlieb Reinhard Oehler founded the tar paint factory Oehler in Offenbach in 1842 . In 1905 the owners sold the factory to Griesheim-Elektron for two million marks . Later it belonged to the Hoechst dye works . In 1997, Hoechst sold the division, which also included the Offenbach plant, to Clariant . In 2001, Clariant sold the plant, which was continued under the name AllessaChemie until the end of 2009 and then completely abandoned.

Eduard Oehler , son of the company founder, introduced many, then exemplary social institutions in his plant. In addition to a company health insurance fund and the canteen , this also included shower and bath rooms. The building was used in its original sense for a long time. Only in 1975, when a new social building went into operation, was it partially converted.

The building

Appearance

Street view

The main building was originally planned to be much longer. What can be seen today is the first and only completed construction phase. The large gable , which today forms the northern end point of the building, would have become the center of the facade if the building had been completed - so only the south wing stands.

The building stands on a rustic sandstone base and is plastered. The external appearance also determines the sandstone structure of the facade , on the ground floor with blind arcades with segmented arches . They border pairs of windows with a round finish. The windows are rectangular above the continuous, profiled cornice above . The roof is covered with beaver tail and is interrupted by a mansard-like attic that is illuminated through oval windows.

The tower

The southern end of the main building, designed as a tower, is particularly important in terms of urban planning . It is placed transversely, square, with a longitudinally rectangular floor plan and a gable roof. The windows in the upper part are small and give the impression of loopholes . A round tower with a pointed helmet designed as a bay window adorns the tower, a quote from medieval sacred architecture or castle building . Clocks are attached to three sides.

To the south is the entrance portal, which is then flanked in turn by a smaller, only one-story building with a simple saddle roof, which extends to Mühlheimer Straße.

use

The bathroom for the workers, the kitchen for the canteen and its dining rooms were on the ground floor. The public baths were connected to the east in a separate building with a glass dome roof.

The building has been unused since it closed down at the end of 2009. The city of Offenbach is planning to build a commercial area on the former industrial site. The listed social building and bathhouse should also be used again.

Monument property

The wing of the building is an important testimony to Offenbach's industrial history. Its status as a monument is derived from its high social-historical , architectural and urban significance.
