Ōkami to Kōshinryō ( Japanese 狼 と 香辛料 , dt. "Wolf and Spice"), published in Germany as a manga under the title Spice & Wolf , is a Japanese light novel series written by Isuna Hasekura and illustrated by Jū Ayakura becomes. Although conceived as a fantastic adventure with magic in a medieval time with European influences, the book series increasingly addresses topics of economy and trade and dispenses with the usual sword-and-magic scheme. The first edition received the 12th Silver Dengeki Prize even before it was published in 2005, and the Mainichi Shimbun describes the book series as a “unique fantasy”.
The plot of the light novel follows the traveling merchant Kraft Lawrence, who meets the pagan wolf goddess Holo (Horo). In the form of a fifteen-year-old girl with a human appearance - apart from her ears and tail ( kemonomimi ) - she accompanies Lawrence on his trade routes. With her natural instinct, she helps him to increase his profit.
The light novel series was adapted through various media. This includes a manga series, an anime implementation with two seasons of 13 episodes each and an implementation as a Ren'ai simulation .
action
The traveling merchant Kraft Lawrence is on his usual trade routes to trade in various things. While spending the night near the village of Pasroe , he discovers the wolf goddess Holo in his car. She introduces herself to him as the goddess of the harvest , who will bring her owner a good wheat harvest for many years to come.
Despite her responsibility for Pasroe , she would like to return to her northern homeland, Yoitsu . Convinced that people have already forgotten her and that she has already fulfilled her promise to ensure a good harvest, she wants to accompany Kraft Lawrence on his way. On their journey, Holo's instinct and wisdom help them increase profits again and again. At the same time, however, Holo also attracts the attention of the church, which persecutes the two and is repeatedly responsible for the loss of parts of the income. In the series of books, the two slowly fall in love.
Characters
Kraft Lawrence ( ク ラ フ ト ・ ロ レ ン ス , Kurafuto Rorensu )
- He is a twenty-five year old traveling merchant who drives his horse and cart from town to town. At the age of twelve he started working as a businessman for a relative and has been traveling alone since he was eighteen. With the aim of earning enough money at some point to open his own business, he has been on the road for seven years now. Despite his hostile attitude towards the wolves, who are said to have attacked him eight times, he takes Holo with him on his travels. Over time, annoyed by the carefree nature of Holos, he develops a strong affection for her.
Holo ( ホ ロ , Horo )
- As the wolf goddess, Holo comes from a northern land called Yoitsu . After giving up her promise to the Pasroe settlement , she accompanies Kraft Lawrence on business trips. Despite her appearance as a fifteen year old girl, she is already over six hundred years old and is usually in the shape of a very large wolf, which many people fear.
- She describes herself as the "White Wolf of Yoitsu" ( ヨ イ ツ の 賢 狼 , Yoitsu no Kenrō ). She is usually very haughty and has a strong instinct for independence. Due to her isolation in Pasroe for hundreds of years , she is also very lonely and shows her weak side from time to time. She looks like a 15-year-old girl, but speaks anciently - in the Japanese version her language is based on that of an Oiran (courtesan), in the German version she ores Lawrence. As a person of proud parentage, she is often busy combing and grooming her tail. In addition, there is an unusually strong urge to eat, especially apples, and alcohol.
- Although it is mostly referred to as Horo in fan circles, the Japanese licensor insisted on the use of "Holo" as a transcription. For example, Yen Press in the United States was forced to use this translation despite protests from fans.
Chloe ( ク ロ エ , Kuroe )
- Chloe is a character who only appears in the anime. As a resident of Pasroe , she has known Lawrence for a long time and he introduced her to the principle of trade. Not knowing what to feel towards him, she respects him as a teacher and a good friend. In later sections of the plot she breaks off this friendship and joins the church. Since then she has tried to capture and kill Holo.
Nola Arendt ( ノ ー ラ ・ ア レ ン ト , Nōra Arento )
- She had her first appearance in the second edition of the light novel. As an experienced shepherdess, she comes from the church town of Rubinhaigen and has an experienced helper with her well-trained dog Enekk.
Light novel series
The light novel series was written by the author Isuna Hasekura and illustrated by Jū Ayakura in the style of a manga or anime . The first edition was submitted to ASCII Media Works for the 12th Dengeki Prize in 2005 prior to its publication . There she won the silver award out of more than three thousand entries, taking third place. The first release as a Bunkobon finally took place on February 10, 2006 by ASCII Media Works under the label Dengeki Bunko . A total of 17 volumes had been published by the preliminary conclusion of the series on July 10, 2011. The first nine issues of the series sold a total of more than 2.2 million times. The series has been continued again since 2016. Volume 21 was published on January 10, 2019 in Japan.
In the English-speaking world, the light novel was licensed by Yen Press in September 2008, but initially only the first six volumes. The first translated edition was published in December 2009, with more to follow every 6 months. On April 10, 2012, the publisher announced that it had also licensed volumes 7 to 9, as well as increasing the publication interval to three volumes per year.
Manga
A manga adaptation drawn by Keito Koume with the text by Isuna Hasekura was published from September 27, 2007 to December 2017 in the Seinen magazine Dengeki Maō . ASCII Media Works , the publisher of the magazine, published from March 27, 2008 the chapters in anthologies ( Tankōbon ) under its own label Dengeki Comics in a total of 16 volumes.
From February 2011 to November 2018, the Panini publisher published the entire manga in Germany under its Planet Manga label .
Anime
First season
As Anime - television series with English subtitles Spice and Wolf the first two volumes of the book series were by the animation studio Imagin adapted. Directed by Takeo Takahashi based on the script by Naruhisa Arakawa . Takeo Takahashi was quoted as a big fan of the book series. The character design was largely taken from the novel and revised by Kazuya Kuroda .
In the opening credits , the title Tabi no Tochū ( 旅 の 途中 ) was used by Natsumi Kiyoura . Like the opening credits, the title of the credits Ringo Hiyori - The Wolf Whistling Song ( リ ン ゴ 日 和～ The Wolf Whistling Song) was released by Rocky Chack on a maxi single that was released on February 6, 2008. On March 12, 2008, the soundtrack for the series was released.
The 13 episode series premiered in Japan from January 9 through March 26, 2008 after midnight (the previous day of television ) on Chiba TV and TV Saitama . TV Aichi followed with an offset of just under 2 hours , from the 10th on TV Kanagawa , from the 11th on KBS Kyōto and Sun-TV , from the 12th on Tokyo MX and from January 24th nationwide on AT-X . However, the seventh episode was not broadcast, but instead offered exclusively on DVD. After the television broadcast ended, the series was released on DVD by Pony Canyon . The first DVD contained the first three episodes and was released on April 2, 2008. This was followed by five more DVDs with two episodes each by August 29, 2008, the third DVD also containing the OVA (7th episode). On January 30, 2009, the series appeared again in Japan as a Blu-ray box.
Outside of Japan, the series was licensed by Kadokawa Pictures USA but distributed by Funimation . NipponArt released the series in a German synchronization between December 5, 2019 and May 25, 2020 on three Blu-rays. This version was broadcast in German by ProSieben Maxx from August 17, 2020 .
Second season
A second season entitled Ōkami to Kōshinryō II was shown from July 9 to September 24, 2009 after midnight on TV Kanagawa on Japanese television. With an hour delay, TV Aichi followed, the next day Chiba TV and Sun TV and the next day KBS Kyōto, Saitama TV and Tokyo MX and, from July 20, AT-X nationwide. It comprises 13 episodes, including an episode called Act 0 that was not broadcast on television, but on April 30, 2009 as a DVD supplement (OVA) to the visual novel ( Dengeki Bunko's term for short stories / novels, but otherwise denotes a computer game genre ) Ōkami to Kōshinryō: Ōkami to Kin no Mugiho ( 狼 と 香辛料 狼 と 金 の 麦 穂 ) attached. A DVD and Blu-Ray version appeared on October 7, 2009, with the first volume also containing Act 0.
The second season essentially corresponds to the content of the novel volumes 3 and 5.
For the most part, the same employees worked on the series as in the first season. However, the character designer Kazuya Kuroda was replaced by Toshimitsu Kobayashi and the animation is taken over by the Brain's Base studio instead of Imagin . NipponArt has been releasing the series on Blu-ra since July 20, 2020, with the last scheduled to appear on October 1.
The opening credits were underlaid with the title Mitsu no Yoake ( 蜜 の 夜 明 け ), which was sung by Akino Arai . The title Perfect World was heard in the end credits, which, like in the first season, have played down the characters and kept it in the style of a children's book . It was written by Yūho Iwasato and composed by Tarō Yamashita. As in the credits for the first part, the interpretation was performed by the group Rocky Chack .

computer game
On the basis of the book series and the anime series, the computer game amikami to Kōshinryō: Boku to Horo no Ichinen ( 狼 と 香辛料 ボ d と ホ ロ の 一年 , German "Wolf and spices: My one year with Holo") was created for Nintendo DS . It was released on June 26, 2008 as a mixture of Ren'ai simulation and economic simulation . The player takes on the role of Kraft Lawrence, who is on the road with Holo for a year. The game world differs from that known from the book and series. In the game, as in the anime, Ami Koshimizu spoke the role of Holo.
On the day of release, the game was released in both regular and limited editions. The more expensive limited edition included an additional life-size poster from Holo.
