In a register of the tithe of the Hersfeld monastery ( Hersfeld tithe list ), which was created between 881 and 899, Spielberg is mentioned for the first time in a document as a place of tithe Spileberc im Friesenfeld . The typical round village belonged to the property of the Pforta monastery and after its secularization in the year 1540 to 1815 to the Electoral Saxon office of Pforta . The decisions of the Congress of Vienna led to Prussia and in 1816 the county Naumburg in the administrative district of Merseburg of the Province of Saxony assigned to which it belonged until the 1944th

Hohndorf became a part of Spielberg on July 1, 1976 when Burgheßler was reassigned . With effect from October 17, 2004, the formerly independent political municipality of Spielberg was merged with the municipality of Taugwitz . The districts of the former municipality of Spielberg were Benndorf, Hohndorf, Spielberg and Zäckwar. Due to another change in the municipality, Spielberg became a part of the newly formed municipality of Lanitz-Hassel-Tal on July 1, 2009.
