The Sporthaus Ziegenhals was a restaurant on the Dahme in the Niederlehmer part of Ziegenhals in the Dahme-Spreewald district , which was listed as a monument in the list of monuments of the state of Brandenburg and was demolished in 2010.

It gained importance when Ernst Thälmann appeared here for the last time on February 7, 1933, before his arrest by the Berlin police, as a speaker at a meeting of KPD functionaries of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD).

A week after the appointment of Hitler as Chancellor by Hindenburg was already under difficult conditions in the sports house Ziegenhals one from the Central Committee of the Communist Party instead convened meeting of political secretaries, ZK-instructors and department heads of the party, which was attended by about 40 leading officials. At the meeting prepared by Herbert Wehner , Thälmann spoke about the upcoming Reichstag election on March 5, 1933 . The aim of the meeting was to agree on how to proceed in the face of the new political situation. The original manuscript or shorthand of the speech have not been preserved. Parts of it could be reconstructed from Gestapo files .

It was Thälmann's last important appearance as party leader. The police arrested him in Berlin on March 3, 1933. Numerous other participants came to concentration camps or were murdered during the Nazi regime; others, like Pieck and Ulbricht, took up leading positions in the GDR after the war .

GDR time

On February 7, 1953, the building was inaugurated by Wilhelm Pieck as a memorial, and a visit to the GDR became a must for many young pioneers and FDJ members .

After 1990

The memorial was closed after the turning point and peaceful revolution . In 2002 the property was auctioned by TLG Immobilien ; the new owner planned to demolish the Ziegenhals sports store in order to use the property as a building site. Despite protests from the Freundeskreis Ernst-Thälmann-Gedenkstätte Ziegenhals e. V. , the demolition took place in May 2010. Initiators organized the purchase of part of the property on the site and a memorial stone from donations. On February 10, 2013, the memorial stone with the inscription February 7, 1933. Illegal meeting of the KPD in the sports store Ziegenhals under the direction of its chairman Ernst Thälmann. Organized resistance against Nazi rule begins. inaugurated.

Similar memorial sites existed and existed in Plötzensee , Berlin-Tiergarten , Schöneiche (former Reichsparteischule of the KPD "Rosa Luxemburg" ) and Hamburg .
