The Sportski centar Morača ( Montenegrin Спортски центар Морача ; German Sportzentrum Morača ) is a sports center with various sports facilities in the Montenegrin capital Podgorica . The building, inaugurated in 1978, is located on the right bank of the Morača River , which gives the center its name. The facility extends over five hectares and is owned by the city. It will u. a. used as the home ground of the sports club Budućnost Podgorica with its various departments of the club. In addition to sport, there are also cultural events and concerts.
history
The facility was opened in 1978. To mark the occasion, the Yugoslav national basketball team played a friendly against the American college basketball team of the Wichita State Shockers .
In the run-up to the European basketball championship in 2005 , the hall was completely renovated in order to meet the requirements of FIBA Europe . In 2009 the center received a swimming pool and a water polo pool. It was the venue for the 2009 World League . In 2018, the main hall was renovated and expanded so that it would meet the ULEB standard (including at least 5000 seats) and the EuroLeague from KK Budućnost Podgorica could take place. The capacity was increased to 6000 and also VIP - boxes installed. In addition, the former indoor water polo pool was converted into a hall for basketball, handball and volleyball with 2,200 seats. The costs were around 4.5 million euros .
The Sportski centar Morača was selected as one of four venues for the European Women's Handball Championship in 2022 .
