The stages of the city of Cologne are a similar establishment of the city of Cologne , in which the city theaters with their venues and ensembles are brought together. These include the Cologne Opera and the Cologne Theater .

The stages of the city of Cologne are run by a managing director, a technical operations manager and an artistic director for each of the opera and drama areas. Birgit Meyer has been the opera director since 2012 , and Stefan Bachmann has been the acting director since 2013 . The general music director François-Xavier Roth (since 2015) is also the musical director of the opera and the Gürzenich orchestra .

Until 2002 there was a general manager of the stages of the city of Cologne (most recently Günter Krämer ), afterwards the management was divided between the directors of opera and drama.

Due to the renovation of the opera and theater on Offenbachplatz, which will continue until the end of 2022, the stages of the City of Cologne have moved into various interim theaters. The opera Köln uses up to completion of the opera house at Offenbachplatz is located along the Rhine Staatenhaus as a venue.

The Cologne Opera is located on Offenbachplatz . As things currently stand, the building will not be available again until 2023 due to renovation work.

Old pawn shop

The Cologne Children's Opera has moved into temporary quarters in the old pawn shop in Cologne's Südstadt district. The Yakulthalle, a former performance venue for the children's opera in the foyer of the opera house, had to be abandoned due to the renovation plans of the Cologne Opera . For the duration of four seasons, until the end of the opera house renovation, the old pawn shop near Chlodwigplatz will be the venue for the children's opera. Brigitta Gillessen is the artistic director of the children's opera.

The concert hall of the old pawn shop can hold around 250 people and is arranged in three ascending rows around the stage, creating direct contact between the audience and the artists.

Under the direction of the then artistic director of the children's opera, Elena Tzavara, the first premiere took place in the new venue on October 29, 2009 with “Die Feuerrote Friederike”.

In a former locksmith's shop in Krebsgasse, this venue is also accommodated with around 130 seats. The plays, mostly by modern authors, are aimed at a young audience.

Hall lime

Until it was closed, this former factory hall with 200 seats was the only permanent venue on the right bank of the Rhine for the city of Cologne's theaters (drama). Performances and installations (by Gregor Schneider, among others ) by Schauspiel Köln took place in Halle Kalk . The listed hall had to be closed in 2015 due to the risk of collapse and was no longer allowed to be used. In July 2015 the German Cultural Council put the listed and collapsing hall on the Red List of Culture and classified it as endangered (category 2).

dance

The dance company pretty ugly tanz köln , with the artistic director Amanda Miller since 2005, was contractually affiliated to the stages of the city of Cologne, but organized as a separate limited liability company. The contract expired in 2008. At the end of February 2013, the Cologne cultural department head Georg Quander announced that there would be no guest dance performances in the 2013/14 season. The one million euros initially earmarked for this purpose were withdrawn. A program had already been worked out. In order to maintain the city budget for guest dance performances this season, a broad action alliance has campaigned and organized protest events, including the Cologne Cultural Council from around 60 Cologne cultural institutions.
