Stéphane Riethauser (* 1972 in Geneva , Switzerland ) is a Swiss filmmaker , film producer , journalist , author , translator , teacher , photographer and gay activist.

Riethauser comes from a middle-class background. His father, Luc Riethauser, wanted to become a director and made a short film in the 1960s.

During his youth, Riethauser shot various film clips that were based on Westerns and during this time he showed his talent for filmmaking.

He studied law at the University of Geneva and graduated in 1995. A stay in New York followed . Until 2002 he worked as a teacher. In 1999 he founded his film production company Lambda Prod. In 2000 he was the author of an illustrated book with young people coming out with a foreword by Ruth Dreifuss .

Since 2003 he has also been making various documentaries for the Swiss radio and television station RTS , for example for the cultural program Ilico.

He is also active as a gay activist with his artistic work in Switzerland. He wrote for the Swiss magazine 360 ° as a journalist.

He became known across Europe in 2019 for the documentary film Madame , which portrays the mutual life story of his grandmother and of him in the process of self-discovery and identification. The film took part in various festivals, such as the Locarno film festival , the festivals in Solothurn , Taipei , Duisburg , Tübingen , Vienna , Madrid , Nyon and Zurich . He received awards in Thessaloniki and Madrid, among others .

Since 2009 he has lived and worked as a freelance filmmaker in Berlin .
