The Catholic parish church of Saint-Corneille (also Saint-Corneille-Saint-Cyprian ) in Chartrettes , a municipality in the Seine-et-Marne department in the French region of Île-de-France , was built in the 13th century in the Gothic style and in 15./16. Century partially renewed. The church is dedicated to Pope Cornelius . Saint Cyprian is venerated as the second church patron . In 1946, the church was added to the list of architectural monuments in France as a Monument historique .

history

The church was first consecrated in 1224 . During the Hundred Years War the church was partially destroyed and then rebuilt. From 1793 the mortal remains of the French King Louis VII were kept in the church . They were originally buried in the Barbeau monastery that he founded . Since the monastery was closed in 1791 and largely destroyed during the French Revolution , the remains were brought to Chartrettes. In 1817, the then King Louis XVIII. transfer to Saint-Denis in the former abbey church, the burial place of the French kings.

Pointed arch arcades

The square bell tower covered by a pyramid roof rises on the south side and is supported by massive buttresses. On the top floor it is broken up on all four sides by slightly pointed twin arcades.

The nave consists of two parallel naves , which are separated from each other by wide arcades supported by pointed arches. In the east there is a right-angled choir .

Leaded glass window

A leaded glass window depicting Saint Vincent is signed: L.DROUIN Paris 1901 . St. Therese von Lisieux is shown on one window, the Holy Family , Mary at the spindle and Joseph as a carpenter on another window . A window shows the patron saint of the church, St. Cornelius. The window depicting a Madonna and Child dates from 1949 and is signed Jacques Bony .

Wood paneling
  • The wood paneling was originally in a chapel in Fontainebleau Castle . It was installed in the Church of Chartrettes in 1740.
  • The pulpit dates from 1858. It was a gift from the Empress Eugénie .
  • On the procession flag from the 19th century Mary is shown standing on the crescent moon , with her left foot she is crushing the snake.
