St-Hildevert in Gournay-en-Bray

The Roman Catholic Church St-Hildevert in Gournay-en-Bray , a French commune in the Seine-Maritime department in the region of Normandy , was built in the 12th century. The Romanesque church has been a protected architectural monument ( Monument historique ) since 1840 .

architecture

The church , consecrated to St. Hildevert, a bishop of Meaux , was built on the site of a previous church built in the 10th and 11th centuries. The 48 meter long and 27 meter wide building, built as a collegiate church, has a main nave with six bays , which is flanked by two aisles. The transept and the three-bay choir with a flat end are mostly from the 12th century. The central nave, which was restored in 1875, dates from the first half of the 12th century, as does most of the transept. The 28-meter-long main nave is formed on the ground floor from massive, double-tiered arched arcades . The wide upper clad windows are unadorned. The tower over the crossing was demolished in 1649.

On the west facade there are three portals , which are decorated with archivolts resting on columns . The facade is surmounted by two mighty towers.

organ

The organ goes back in part to an instrument that was built in 1538 by an unknown organ builder for another church. Part of the organ case has been preserved . The organ was installed in Gournay in 1793. The organ work dates from 1950; it was reconstructed by the organ builder Gutschenritter. The instrument has registers according to the following disposition on two manual works and a pedal . The playing and stop actions are electro-pneumatic.
