The Catholic parish church of Saint-Hippolyte in Jaligny-sur-Besbre , a commune in the Allier in the French region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes , was probably built in the 11th century as a palace chapel. The church has valuable sculptures from the 15th century.

history

The originally planned five- bay church was not completed. After the completion of the third yoke, construction work was stopped for unknown reasons. At the end of the 18th century, the west facade was built, presumably on the site of the temporary wall. The old bell tower was demolished in 1794 as a result of the French Revolution . In the 19th century, today's octagonal tower was rebuilt.

inner space

The three-aisled nave has three bays . The choir is the oldest part of the church and some of it dates from the 11th century. Romanesque capitals have been preserved in the choir, some of which are figurative, some of which are ornamental.

The dome under the tower was decorated with wall paintings in the 18th century. One scene shows Jesus and the Samaritan woman, the other Mary Magdalene , who considers the risen Jesus to be a gardener.

Leaded glass window

Majestas Domini

The stained glass windows of the church date from the 19th century. The oldest window was made in the stained glass workshop of Alexandre Mauvernay in Saint-Galmier in 1848 . It depicts the French King Louis the Saint wearing the crown of thorns on a pillow. The signature: Mauvernay et Pagnon St. Galmier 1848 is on the lower left edge of the picture . Another window depicting the apparition of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to the nun Margareta Maria Alacoque has the signature: ÉTIENNE (F. Étienne) et MOUILLERON (L. Mouilleron) A BAR-LE-DUC 1890 . The other windows are not signed. St. Francis of Assisi , the apostles Peter and John , the apostles Paul and St. Eugene as well as the allegorical representations of peace, love and hope can be seen on them. One window shows St. Dominic receiving the rosary from Our Lady . A Majestas Domini is depicted on the round window above the gallery .

Furnishing

The church has three sculptures from the 15th century, which are listed as Monuments historiques in the list of listed objects in France. All three figures are carved from stone. Saint Barbara (left) and John the Baptist (right) face each other in the second yoke of the nave. John the Baptist is shown with the sacrificial lamb , Saint Barbara with her attribute , the tower. The group of sculptures of the Pietà stands at the end of the north aisle.
