The church Saint-Pierre is a Romanesque church in the town of Uchizy in the Saône-et-Loire in the historic region of Burgundy ( France ), which was built in the 11th century.

history

The church of Uchizy, consecrated to the apostle Peter , was first mentioned in a document in 878 , when Ludwig II gave the village with the church of Saint-Pierre to the monastery in Tournus . The current church was built in the last quarter of the 11th century, with the entrance always from the long side, because the priory building was added to the west .

architecture

The Saint-Pierre church was built from quarry stone , which was worked very precisely, because at the time of construction the use of quarry stone had already become an anachronism . The nave with two side aisles is followed by a transept and a choir with barrel vaults . A semicircular apse forms the end . There is a semicircular apse on the east side of the transverse arms of the transept. The main nave with four bays has a pointed barrel vault, which is reinforced by belt arches. The transept has a crossing on a right-angled floor plan, on whose four massive pillars the bell tower rises. From the crossing, arched arcades open to the cross arms.

The rectangular bell tower has five floors and all pages are adorned with arched windows and a jagged fries . On the top floor, which consists of larger ashlar stones, rectangular windows open. This floor, added later, was used as an observation tower during wartime.
