St. Mark's Church in the Hirzbrunnenquatier of Basel

The St. Markus Church is an Evangelical Reformed church in Basel in the Hirzbrunnen district .

history

Around 1860, today's Hirzbrunnen district was still considered a recreational area for the city of Basel. From 1924, the area was gradually built up for residential purposes. In this context, the reformed church building on Kleinriehenstrasse was inaugurated in 1932 and named after the evangelist Markus . In the 1950s, the building was expanded for the first time by the architect Peter Sarasin by adding ancillary rooms and supplemented with a free-standing rectory . At that time, the also free-standing bell tower with the tower cock by Celestino Piatti was built . The need for more space and the call for a neighborhood meeting point led to further conversions and extensions in the 1980s. In combination with the church, a community center with two halls and a kitchen was created.

The church is due to be demolished in 2018 and residential construction is planned on the site.
