Parish Church of Saint Aegidius

The church Sankt Aegidius in Bad Salzig , a local district of Boppard , is the parish church of the Catholic parish Sankt Aegidius. The church or parish is named after St. Aegidius . A chapel stood at the site of today's church as early as the 13th century, and today's parish church was consecrated in 1904.

The Bad Salzig cemetery borders the church to the west and the rectory to the north. The entire complex with the parish church, cemetery and rectory is under monument protection .

location

The church stands on a hill southwest of the former village center. It was only fully integrated into the town in the 20th century. The street on which it stands is called Weilerer Weg. Your main entrance is reached via a long staircase from the north. To the west of the church is the Bad Salzig cemetery. To the north, a little below the church, there is the also listed rectory.

history

Pietà in St. Aegidius from the second half of the 15th century

A chapel in Salzig was first mentioned in documents by the Archbishop of Trier Heinrich II von Finstingen on June 12, 1275 and by King Adolf von Nassau on January 7, 1294. The chapel also appeared in the Liber Donationum book of donations from around 1290 . The patron saint of the chapel was St. Aegidius , one of the fourteen helpers in need .

In the 14th and 15th centuries, a new church was built on the site of the chapel. The choir from the 14th century and the bell tower from the 15th century are part of today's parish church. The Marienglocke, the oldest bell in the church, was cast in 1471. With the granting of the right to its own baptismal font, probably on March 25, 1563, Salzig and the Weiter branch were made an independent parish. In 1568 the church was first referred to as a parish church.

When the Salziger Church was built, the villages of Salzig and Weiler together had around 300 inhabitants. In 1788 there were already 798 and in 1825 around 1100 residents. The church got too small. An extension was built around 1702 and the church was enlarged again in 1825. But even this extension was not enough. In 1868 the number of parishioners had risen to 1,684. Under Pastor Nick, after whom a street in Salzig east of the church is named, an additional extension was built by the architect Lambert von Fisenne in the style of a neo-Gothic hall church. Construction began on January 27, 1899 and was completed on August 11, 1901. The new building cost around 83,000 marks. On April 24, 1904, the church was consecrated by Bishop Michael Felix Korum . In 1905, pastor Rahm built today's rectory east of the church on the church stairs.

The pastor Werner Mathieu, who worked in Bad Salzig from 1966, first had the rectory and then the parish church renovated in 1967 and 1968. The chancel was rebuilt. The new altar was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Alfred Kleinermeilert . Around twenty years later, the Aegidius Church was renovated again under Pastor Meidt. Between 1985 and 1987 it was given a new slate roof and, after the outer walls had been drained, a new exterior painting. Another renovation of the interior took place in 1988.

Descriptions of individual objects

Mount of Olives Group

The Ölberggruppe is a place of worship on the north-western outer wall of the parish church consisting of four stone sculptures. In the center of the work of art, a Jesus sculpture kneels on a rock in side view (110 cm high). The view is directed upwards. In the foreground below the Jesus sculpture, the three apostles James , John and Peter (82 to 86 cm high) are shown from left to right. James supports himself with his right hand on his right knee and holds a book with his left hand. John, sitting in the middle, holds an open book in his hands and Peter, half kneeling, half sitting, carries a sword in his right hand and supports his head with his left.

organ

The organ of St. Aegidius Church dates back to 1715 and was made by Johann Hoffmann from Würzburg for the Marienberg Benedictine Abbey in Boppard . It is equipped with a pedal , two manuals and 13 stops .

In 1756 it was cleaned up and tuned by the Stumm brothers . They also built a new tremulant for the organ. As a result of the secularization in 1802, the organ came to the Boppard Carmelite Church . Organ builder Hünd worked on it there in 1857. After the completion of the St. Aegidius Church, the organ was purchased in 1903 and installed by the organ builder Christian Gerhardt. In 1970 it was renovated by the company Gebr. Oberlinger Orgelbau for 50,000 DM and probably expanded to include the swell . The Raab-Plenz Orgelbau company carried out cleaning and repair work on the organ.

Marienbell

The first bell of the Aegidius Church was cast in 1471 and still hangs in its tower today. It bears no signature, but due to the peculiarities of its inscription, the bell is attributed to the Andernach bell founder Paulus von Üdersdorf. It has a height of 85 cm and a diameter of 93 cm. The pilgrimage sign of Servatius of Maastricht standing on a dragon with a crosier and key is incorporated on her cloak . In addition, the bell bears the single-line inscription maria, my name is maria, they ring me in goldis eren, I am not angry either . This inscription is framed by round bars. The name Marienglocke could be traced back to the foundation of a weekly mass in honor of Our Lady in 1466 .

graveyard

The Bad Salzig cemetery connects to the west of the parish church. Together with the church, it is a listed building because there are still some grave crosses from the 17th century.

Monument protection

The entire complex of parish church, cemetery and parsonage is protected as a registered cultural monument in the sense of the Monument Protection and Maintenance Act (DSchG) of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Since 2002 the church of St. Aegidius has also been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley .
