St. Andrew's Church

The Sankt Andreas Church is the Catholic church in Elbingerode (Harz) , a district of the town of Oberharz am Brocken in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt . It belongs to the parish “St. Bonifatius ”based in Wernigerode , in the Halberstadt deanery of the Magdeburg diocese . The church named after St. Andrew the Apostle is located on Waldhofstraße, on the edge of the cemetery; their parish hall is located at Goetheplatz 6a.

history

With the introduction of the Reformation in the 16th century, the population and the churches in the Harz became Evangelical Lutheran . The parish church of St. Andreas burned down in 1753 and 1858.

From the second half of the 19th century, Catholics settled again in the area around Elbingerode. These were workers who found employment in the Harz lime and stone works near Rübeland . From August 1907 a Catholic service was held in Rübeland; The Harzer Kalkindustrie-Werke provided the space for this. A church building planned in Rübeland, for which a piece of land was acquired in 1911, could not be realized.

From January 2nd, 1938 on, Holy Masses were also held in Elbingerode , initially by the pastor from Blankenburg . They took place in a private house. On August 16, 1940, the Parish Vicarie Elbingerode-Rübeland belonging to the parish of St. Josef in Blankenburg was founded, Father Onesimus Röwer OFM († 1961) was its first clergyman. It was initially based in Rübeland and later moved to Elbingerode. A house was bought in Elbingerode and the emergency church Herz Jesu and a parish apartment were set up in it. The emergency church was later replaced by today's St. Andrew's Church. It emerged from the cemetery chapel rented for this purpose and was inaugurated by Theodor Hubrich in 1975 . At that time Theodor Stolpe (1932-2016), who later became Vicar General of the Diocese of Magdeburg, was Kuratus in Elbingerode.

In 1994 the affiliation of the church changed from the diocese of Hildesheim to the then newly founded diocese of Magdeburg. In November 2006 the organ was installed, it was built in 1960 by Paul Ott and restored in 2006 by the organ manufacturer Jost Truthmann in Frankfurt (Oder) .

On July 1, 2007, the foundation of a community group comprising the Catholic communities in Elbingerode, Hesse , Ilsenburg , Osterwieck , Wasserleben , Wernigerode and Zilly ; since then the church has had no resident clergy. In May 2010, the parish “St. Bonifatius ”based in Wernigerode, the Elbingerode Curate was canceled in this context. The 2011 census in the European Union showed that of the 11,686 inhabitants of the town of “Oberharz am Brocken” 260 belonged to the Roman Catholic Church, which corresponds to around 2.2%. The majority of the population today does not belong to any religious community.

In 2015, a statue of the Virgin Mary purchased from a Polish artist was placed in the chapel of the parish hall. It shows Mary (mother of Jesus) as 1846 French La Salette appeared, and was on April 15, 2015 at St. Andrew's Church by a priest of Our Lady of La Salette Missionaries ordained .

Churches of the Hildesheim diocese in the GDR

During the existence of the GDR, six churches on the territory of the GDR belonged to the West German diocese of Hildesheim, but were subordinate to Apostolic Administrators residing in the GDR. The church in Neuhaus for the administrator in Schwerin, the churches in Blankenburg (Harz), Elbingerode (Harz), Hasselfelde and Hessen for the administrator in Magdeburg and the church in Niedersachswerfen for the administrator of Erfurt and Meiningen. Only the church in Neuhaus still belongs to the Hildesheim diocese today. The other churches today belong to the dioceses of Magdeburg and Erfurt, which have existed since July 8, 1994 .
