Church in Harzungen

The Evangelical Church of St. Andreas is located in the Harzungen district of the Harztor rural community in the Nordhausen district in Thuringia .

history

Harzungen owned a church and a pastor as early as 1050 . After the Reformation was introduced , it became a branch church of the Neustadt / Harz parish until 2004 .

To the church

The double-shell outer walls of the fortified tower from the 12th century and the nave are made of porphyry and limestone , partly also of gypsum and anhydrite stone . The corners of the tower are carved corner stones.

In 1756 the church was given a wall. You enter the tower from the west side. The room in the tower has a broken stone vault with an octagonal half-timbered cross and which hood . Loopholes in the tower testify to the strength of defense in the Middle Ages. At that time, the fortified church was surrounded by meter-high walls. In 1930 the remains were removed.

The single-nave church building was added to the tower. It includes a baroque hall with a wooden barrel and a separate chancel . Access is on the south side.

A note in the chancel indicates that work on the church was completed on June 23, 1750. The galleries , the stalls , the organ and the pulpit altar were built in.

The baptismal font with a cylindrical base is evidence of Romanesque . The organ was checked in 1853 by master organ builder Knauf from Bleicherode .

Four very old and valuable bells of bronze has the parish.

The electric Leipzig tower clock was purchased in 1973. It strikes every half hour.

In the spring of 2004 the church tower and the organ loft had to be closed due to static problems. The logical decision was made to save the church from deterioration.
