The Catholic parish church of St. Antonius Einsiedler is a church building in Gerlingen , a district of Wenden (Sauerland) in the district of Olpe ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) that characterizes the locality . History and architecture

The text of the document location of the possessions, old rights, habits, income and earnings and goods of the pastor's house of the Wendener Kirch is translated accordingly The Mölmicker wood with its associated field, in meadows, in water, in heaths, in high forest, in coppice and in Hecke has been hereditary handed over to the vicarage to Wenden for 10 quarters of water annually to be given from pastor estates of the Liesen to Wenden .

First chapel

Documented traditions for a chapel are available in a report by the Vicar General of Cologne from 1628. It is reported that this chapel was under the patronage of Antonius Einsiedler and mother Anna. The altar was destroyed in the Thirty Years War and re-consecrated on July 20, 1647 in honor of the two church patrons. The Paderborn auxiliary bishop Bernhard von Frick consecrated the desecrated and destroyed churches on the occasion of a trip through the Sauerland region of the Electorate of Cologne . After making entries in his diary, he rededicated the altar on July 20, 1647. There are relics of Barbara and given it the Anthony with the altar. Over time the building became dilapidated, a report by Pastor Arnoldi on the condition of the church has been handed down: “ We temporary pastors and provisional offices of the parish churches of St. Severin Episcopi in Wendem announce, testify and confess for ourselves and our successors. According to our branch Kirch zu Gerlingen or Kapell S. Antonii Eremitae and S. Annae, which were bawled by Holtz ancient times and years ago and were covered with straw, must be renewed because of dilapidation and narrowness, and then the necessary consideration is that a new chapel bricked up to under the roof and provided with leyen stones sothanes roof, this new house of God would also be expanded. "

The construction was canceled and the foundation stone for the new chapel was laid in the same place in 1734 . Various donations and foundations were also reported here. The chapel provisional Johannes Greve was commissioned by the pastor to build a new chapel. In autumn 1735 there were financial problems that delayed the construction, the chapel was inaugurated on July 29, 1736 by the pastor Arnoldi. A copy of the inauguration document has survived: Franz Caspar von Francken-Sierstorpf, by the grace of God and the grace of the Apostolic See, Bishop of Radiopolis, auxiliary bishop and vicar general of the archbishop and elector of Cologne, Clemens August von Bayern, as auxiliary bishop, chairman of the cathedral chapter and dean of the monasteries St. Severin, Maria im Capitol and St. Ursula etc. The pastor got permission to open the chapel in Gerlingen in the Westphalian part of the Archdiocese of Cologne, which was built in honor of St. Hermits Antony and St. Anna was erected in a simple form without St. To consecrate an anointing and release it for worship. The building had a floor area of about 60 m², the west tower was about six to seven meters high, with a small bell hanging in it. The bell was rung with a hemp rope that reached into the chapel. In 1876 a new 225 pound bell was purchased. The old bell had fallen and cracked, it was melted down. The open space, about 15 × 18 meters in size, on which the chapel stood, was surrounded by poplars and ash trees. In the interior stood the high altar and the figures of Antonius, Barbara, Anna and Maria, they came from the chapel from 1628. The Mother of God altar stood on the left, the so-called women's side. The building was accessed through a main and a side entrance. In this chapel there was a memorial stone with the inscription ANNO 1734 DEO, B. VIRGINI PATRONIS ANTONIO ET ANNAE PIET FIT EXTRVCT SUB AD RD PASTORE PETRO ARNOLDI ET JOHANNE GREVE PROVISORE (In 1734 the chapel was owned by the High Pastor Peter Arnoldi for Glory of God, the blessed Virgin, our dear patrons Antonius and Anna, when Johannes Greve was provisional). Since at the end of the 18th century the requirements for the school building no longer met the requirements, a false ceiling was added to the chapel and a classroom was set up here. The room was accessed by a path rising from the street. The road master Borggreve prepared the building design. The classroom was used until 1895. In the course of time the chapel became too small due to the growing population, and the building was damp and musty. The demolition began in 1896, the furnishings of the school room, the windows and the trees around the chapel were auctioned.

The old chapel was demolished in 1896 and the newly built church was consecrated on August 26, 1897 by Bishop Hubertus von Paderborn, under the patronage of Antonius Einsiedler and Barbara. The left outer wall stands on the right side of the foundation of the chapel. Provost Schneider, who was born in Gerlingen and later became a bishop, provided the financial means for the new building in order to create a permanent memorial for himself. The building project was managed by the Westphalian Farmers' Association , whose building department also prepared the building plans. The stones of the former chapel were partly used for the foundation. The building was 18 meters long, 11 meters wide and 11.50 meters high. The chancel with sacristy had a floor area of 5.50 × 5.35 meters. The church was consecrated on August 24, 1897 by Bishop Hubertus von Drolshagen. Since at the end of the 18th century the requirements for the school building no longer met the requirements, a false ceiling was added to the chapel and a classroom was set up here. The room was accessed by a path rising from the street. The road master Borggreve prepared the building design. The classroom was used until 1895. The painting above the high altar shows the Last Supper, in memory of Bishop Schneider, he was depicted as one of the apostles. The parish was raised to the status of an independent parish in 1922. Because of the increasing number of residents, in 1925 consideration was given to expanding the building; the project was started in 1932. The groundbreaking ceremony was celebrated on July 25, 1932. Until then, the church consisted of three bays , which encompassed the area of today's rows of banks in the area of the three large windows on both sides; the building was accessed from Koblenzer Strasse. The church tower with its entrance doors was added to the side and an organ stage was built. Part of the church was plastered in 1932 after the expansion. The tower clock was installed in 1933. It was built in the Wortmann watch factory in Recklinghausen. During the Second World War , metallic objects had to be surrendered for purposes important to the war effort. Due to an ordinance, a censer, processional candlestick, kettle, altar candlestick and figures of the Apostles were confiscated. In anticipation of such a measure, some particularly valuable items were stored in advance with private individuals and have been exhibited again in the church since 1945. In the years from 1952 to 1953 the building was extended by one yoke to the east; for this purpose the sacristy and the choir had to be demolished. The architect Klocke from Gelsenkirchen made the plans, he also took over the site management. Demolition material such as B. the bricks were reconditioned by parishioners for reuse. A sacristy with two rooms was added to the new choir. The construction project ended in 1953. The church received its current appearance. On March 15, 1953, an Antonius relic was transferred from the Lateran . It is kept in a shrine. The choir room was redesigned in 1968 according to plans by the architect Ringelhan. The tabernacle was set back and an altar table was built to the front as a celebration altar according to the provisions of the Second Vatican Council . The communion bench was removed and the pulpit demolished. During this time, the heating and ventilation system was repaired and leaks in the church roof were fixed. In the masonry, rising damp required special treatment. During an interior renovation with beauty work, the windows were restored in 1985 and some of them were re-leaded. The large white areas of the vaulted ceiling and the walls were painted, the ornaments were preserved. Some of the church windows were re-leaded and repaired. The roof was re-covered in slate in 1987 and the walls were repainted; these measures were completed in 1988. On September 5, 1993 the newly renovated Antonius Chapel was inaugurated. The restored figures of the Sacred Heart and Heart of Mary have been put up. The adoration chapel was painted in 1995 and the figure of the painful mother inside was discreetly set. The confessional on the right-hand side was removed in 1997 and the crucifixion group was placed in the niche that was thus vacated. The figures and the cross were donated in 1998.
