occupation

The film Ten Winter (original title: Dieci inverni ) is an Italian - Russian production. It is the directing diploma thesis of the Italian author, screenwriter and director Valerio Mieli at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia . The film opened the Controcampo Italiano festival section at the 66th Venice International Film Festival from September 2 to 12, 2009. It tells the story of the relationship between two students who have discovered love over ten years and grow up in the process. She accompanies the film, which is mainly set in wintry Venice, in ten excerpts.

action

In the winter of 1999, eighteen-year-old Camilla from Valdobbiadene went to Venice to study Russian and met Silvestro, a student of the same age, in a vaporetto across the lagoon. He follows her, deliberately misses the last vaporetto, and asks Camilla to stay with her. This is the beginning of a love that grows slowly and only reveals itself after ten years in which both have matured. The ten snapshots are as surprising as life. The film accompanies both of them in their everyday studies in Venice, to Moscow and to a rural wedding celebration in Russia. They have different relationships, they form a shared apartment. From time to time they are enemies, friends, acquaintances, lovers. Sometimes they are close, sometimes they move away from each other again. Every winter a window opens, so to speak, that gives an insight into the lives of the two. Their paths keep crossing until they are adults and recognize their love. The opposing characters of the two main characters are nicely carved out. Camilla is ambitious and reserved, Silvestro is freer and more contradictory. In his film, the director and PhD philosopher Valerio Mieli tells his autobiographically influenced story "with ease and a sugar dust of poetry". The film avoids the touristy Venice. Many scenes take place on the water. The film shows Dorsoduro , the Arsenal , St. Mark's Square at night, San Pietro di Castello , the fish market in Rialto and San Giacomo dall'Orio, always deserted in winter.
The film is based on the book of the same name by the author, screenwriter and director.

Criticism and reception

Ten Winter received mostly positive reviews. The press praised the view of everyday Venice. The Swiss cinema portal Cineman emphasizes the "excellent cast leading roles". "The story [...] should appeal to a larger audience." Particular mention is made of the film's "depth" "without further ado or exaggeration". "The director gives us brushstrokes of pure art, like in a picture the scene becomes immortal." The "brilliant dialogues" are also emphasized. The film was broadcast on ARD in February 2015 and on December 3, 2017 , and on MDR and Einsfestival in 2016 .
