history

Choir

The history of the congregation begins with the establishment of a worship center and the dispatch of a chaplain from the congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Tegel. On August 3, 1952 , the first holy mass was celebrated on the ground floor of a small house in the Waldidyll settlement that served as an emergency church . The intention was later to build a church dedicated to St. Bernard of Clairvaux should be consecrated as a sign of reconciliation with France. At the same time, it was to be the memorial church for Bernhard Lichtenberg, the former provost of St. Hedwig, who stood up for the Jews during the time of the National Socialist dictatorship. In 1954 St. Bernhard became an independent curate . In 1958, the Episcopal Ordinariate granted permission to build the church and the rectory . 30 years after the death of Blessed Bernhard Lichtenberg, a relief was blessed in the church in his memory, which depicts him in the doctrinal talk with Bernhard von Clairvaux.

Building description

Layout

In 1955 the architect designed a church interior with the floor plan of a circular sector open at right angles. A separate chancel was not originally planned, the altar was supposed to be in the geometric center of the circular sector and the benches of the church stalls were to be aligned radially towards the altar. Instead, the implementation expanded the tip of the quarter circle with a choir , the side walls of which are curved inwards and the rear wall of which is curved outwards.

The church is a skeleton structure made of reinforced concrete, the supports and beams of the structure are made of exposed concrete . The walls between the outer pillars of the nave are formed in the upper part by glass blocks as a translucent zone. The choir towers above the nave , its wall above the roof of the nave has windows that illuminate the altar indirectly. Below the windows of this elevated part of the building hang the visible beams that support the ceiling of the church. They are stored at the other end on the walls of the side walls. Both structures are covered with slightly inclined monopitch roofs.

The organ with a manual , a pedal and 18 stops was built by Karl Schuke in 1953 .

Bells

The six-storey bell tower stands at the apex of the circle sector. In it is the portal , it is covered with a gable roof. In the bell room hangs a bell made of four bronze bells , which was cast by Feldmann & Marschel in 1958 .
