St. Clemens (Hombruch)
The Roman Catholic Church of St. Clemens is located in the Dortmund district of Hombruch . It is the parish church of the parish of the same name of St. Clemens in the pastoral association of Dortmund South-West.
Design of the church
It is a three-aisled church in the neo-Gothic style .
The polygonal 5/8 choir has a rib vault , the side aisles have rib vaults in brick structure. The tracery of the windows and the rose window in the west front is simple. The angular pillars, with their framed edges and a simple capital profile, show a rather sparse classicist shape, but without a base. The entire room appears longitudinally accentuated and ends behind the triumphal arch in the choir.
history
During the industrialization in the 19th century, many Catholic workers came to Dortmund. So that the new citizens could find a religious home, a Catholic parish was founded in Hombruch on October 19, 1864.
On October 15, 1866, the Protestant industrialist Clemens Freiherr von Romberg provided the Catholics with a piece of land on which the St. Clemens Church was built.
On June 22, 1870 the foundation stone was laid for the church, which was built according to a design by the architect Arnold Güldenpfennig . Bishop Konrad Martin von Paderborn undertook the solemn consecration of the parish church on September 14, 1871. However, it was stipulated that the parish fair is celebrated on the last Sunday in September.
In 1896 the church was expanded for the first time. Numerous renovation and expansion measures were carried out in the 1920s:
- 1922: Installation of electric lights
- 1924: Extension of the organ stage and installation of heating
- 1927: electric bell and organ fan; Replacement of simple glazing by colored glazing with depictions of saints
On March 10, 1945, the parish church was partially destroyed by an Allied bombing raid on Dortmund in the last days of the Second World War. A short time later, on April 23, 1945, the first clean-up work began. The final restoration (including the installation of the new choir windows) was carried out with the consecration by the Vicar General Dr. Friedrich Maria Rintelen completed on June 27, 1948. In 1948 the four-part cast steel bell with the tones d ', f', g 'and a' was consecrated.
The changes necessary due to the Second Vatican Council were provisionally completed in 1973 with the redesign of the choir and the construction of the new entrances on the south side.
From 1982 the chancel was redesigned. On June 2, 1984 the new neo-Romanesque altar was opened by Archbishop Dr. Johannes Joachim Degenhardt consecrated.
In 1991 the church was given a new paint scheme and the industrial ceiling that was installed after the Second World War was replaced with a wooden ceiling. In addition, the installation of the new windows began. The last single-glazed window was replaced in 2005.
Since September 14, 1993, the church building has been registered as a monument in the list of monuments of the city of Dortmund .
Currently (as of 2014) damage to the bell system has been found. The big bell has been shut down, another bell is only partially in operation. The aim is to cast seven new bronze bells which, together with an existing old bell in f sharp ", should result in an eight-part ringing. The new ringing should be in d'-f sharp'-a'-h'-c sharp" -d "-e "-fis" will sound and will represent the second largest ringing in Dortmund after the number of bells.

Bells
A total of four bells were built into the St. Clemens Church.
The first bells were hung in the church tower in 1872 (St. Clement 1,546 pounds, Joseph's bell 930 pounds, Mary's bell 607 pounds and St. Clara 105 kg). The bells St. Clemens, Joseph Bell and Marien Bell were made by the Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock foundry . The St. Clara bell was cast by the Wilhelm Zimmermann foundry. In 1917 the three largest bells were expropriated for war purposes.
The second chime with three bells cast by the Heinrich Humpert Glockengießerei was installed in 1923. The inscriptions on the three bells read: for the largest bell “St. Mariae ", for the middle" St. Clementis patroni ", for the smallest" St. Margaretae martyris ”. To mark the 100th anniversary, the St. Clara bell was hung up again. During the Second World War , the fate of the three big bells was repeated. They too were confiscated for war purposes.
The third bell was installed in 1948. The steel bells were cast by the Bochum Association . The Christ bell, weighing 1640 kilograms, has the inscription “Unica Christ salus”; the Marienglocke with 980 kilograms bears the inscription "Miseros Filios Mater respicias"; the Joseph Bell with 715 kilograms has the inscription “St. Joseph custos sis familiae "and the Clemens bell weighing 505 kilograms bears the inscription" St. Clemens protege gregem ”.
The fourth bell was installed in 2016. With a total of 10 bells , the parish of St. Clemens has the largest church bell in Dortmund.
