The Catholic Church of St. Dionysius in Rhens , a town in the Mayen-Koblenz district ( Rhineland-Palatinate ), was built at the beginning of the 13th century. The church is a cultural monument worthy of protection .

history

The St. Parish church , consecrated to Dionysius , is located south of the city on a hill and has been used as a cemetery chapel since the construction of the new parish church of St. Theresa (1906/08). It was first mentioned in a document from 873/74.

architecture

The oldest part is the late Romanesque tower from the early 13th century, consisting of rubble stones with clover-leaf covers and a rhombic roof . The late Gothic nave and choir cannot be dated exactly, but were probably built in the course of the 16th century . The choir has a net vault and the nave has a modern wooden coffered ceiling. The two-storey wooden gallery dates from the time between 1520 and 1629, when the church was at times a Protestant parish church.

The baroque furnishings from the middle of the 18th century with a high altar and pulpit bear witness to the return of Catholic rule. From 1987 to 1996 the church was renovated inside and out.

The parish church of St. Dionysius is a protected cultural monument under the Monument Protection Act (DSchG) and entered in the list of monuments of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . It is on Mainzer Strasse .
