St. Francis of Assisi

The Catholic Church of St. Francis of Assisi , before St. John B. M. Vianney Chapel, is in the Hackbusch Straße 14 in Berlin district Staaken of Spandau .

history

With the establishment of the garden city Staaken for the armaments workers of Spandau in the years 1914–1917, many Catholics also moved to the west of Spandau. In 1925, a low chapel was built for them at Finkenkruger Weg 27 , which was consecrated to Francis of Assisi , as an extension to a small, single-storey rectory based on a design by Carl Kühn .

In 1951 Staaken was divided as part of an area swap. The western part came to the Nauen district of the GDR in exchange for an area required by the British to expand the Gatow airfield . After Staaken was now divided by a border, the residents of West Staaken were no longer allowed to pass the way to the church, which was in the restricted area . The church was only demolished at the end of 1987. For the Catholics of the West Berlin part of Staaken, a 20 × 4 m prefabricated house made of wood fiber boards was built as an emergency church in 1955 and consecrated on December 18, 1955 by Prelate Drews on the patronage of St. Jean-Marie Vianney , the pastor of Ars . Francis of Assisi has been its patron since 1970 , a statue in the garden in front of the church represents him. The church is the place of worship for the St. Mark's community in the Spandau dean's office in the Archdiocese of Berlin .
