history

In the Rudolf-Wissell-Siedlung, a large housing estate in the new building area Heerstraße Nord , Catholic services were held for the first time in December 1966 , initially in the evangelical parish hall Hermann-Francke-Heim (Cosmarweg 17/19) and from June 1971 in a rented shop in Loschwitzer Weg 15. On September 15, 1973 chaplain Georg Walf was appointed as pastor for the pastoral care district of Heerstraße Nord, on March 1, 1975 an independent parish was established and on June 5, 1975 Georg Walf was introduced as pastor . The Polish Minorite Father Maximilian Kolbe , a Nazi victim murdered in Auschwitz , was chosen as the parish priest .

Construction work for the church and community center began in June 1974 on the Maulbeerallee / Räckwitzer Steig site. On November 17, 1974, Provost Wolfgang Haendly laid the foundation stone, and on October 18, 1975, Vicar General Wilhelm Albs celebrated the first Holy Mass in the new parish hall . The new church was on 18 September 1976 by the Poznan Auxiliary Bishop Marian Przykucki ordained , presided at the first celebration of the Mass was Auxiliary Bishop Jan Michalski from Gniezno . On December 27, 1979 a bronze sculpture of the parish priest P. Maximilian Kolbe was placed in the church, which was created by Anneliese Schmidt.

Since 2004, after merging with the neighboring parish of St. Wilhelm, the parish of St. Maximilian Kolbe has formed the parish of St. Wilhelm and St. Maximilian Kolbe, with services being held regularly in both churches.

Building description

Chancel with baptistery (right) and Mother of God chapel (left)

The building complex consists of the central building of the towerless church, which is connected to the H-shaped complex of the community center and the rectory via a flat wing . The church is a reinforced concrete - skeleton . The floor plan of the building is roughly a square, the corners of which are cut off so that an octagon with four long and four short sides results. In front of the short open sides, walls made of panels in exposed concrete stand outwards around narrow, vertical windows. In addition, there are low triangular extensions , designed as niches in the interior. The outer wall cladding over the long sides is made of red-brown bricks. A lantern sits on the flat tent roof , to which a dormer window rises from the altar wall in a wedge shape, bringing additional daylight into the interior. The parapet that hides the tent roof is made of panels in exposed concrete. The steel structure of the roof structure , over which the wooden ceiling is located, is open. Eight struts lead from the open corners to below the lantern in the middle. The inner walls are clad with perforated bricks in the lower area to improve the room acoustics , above they are covered with wood.

A spiral staircase leads from one of the niches to the organ loft above the entrance area . The dais extends almost to the middle of the room, the benches of the church stalls are arranged in a semicircle around the altar standing on it .
