St. Raphael

The former, in 1965 , dedicated Roman Catholic Church of St. Raphael was standing in the street Alt-Gatow 49a in Berlin district Gatow of Spandau .

history

The Catholics who settled sporadically in Gatow belonged to the Spandau parish Maria, Hilfe der Christisten until 1935 , and later to its subsidiary church St. Wilhelm . Around this time, Prelate Alexander Frins also moved there, who made a plot of land for a new church available to the evolving congregation. The Gatow Curate was established in 1941, and in 1950 it was elevated to a parish. First, a large room in the former Frins house was converted into a chapel , which was consecrated in 1948. The design planning for the church in the tradition of the liturgical movement was provided by Rudolf Schwarz in 1960, the approval planning and the implementation planning were in the hands of Werner Michalik and Maria Schwarz . On March 15, 2005, the church was deedicated and in July of the same year it was demolished . The property was sold to the Plus supermarket chain , which was later taken over by Netto Marken-Discount . A window by Georg Meistermann originally used in the building complex was installed in 2012 in the newly created chapel of the Center for Mourning Pastoral Care of the Diocese of Limburg at the Church of St. Michael in Frankfurt's Nordend .

Building description

The reinforced concrete - skeleton had a square floor plan . The windowless walls between the supports at each corner and between two more on each side consisted of white plastered masonry . Above it rose a ribbon of windows, set back to the flat roof , which widened behind the altar down to the trapezoid . The trapeze emphasized the altar, as did the size of the dais , which stretched from the altar wall to the center of the room. For the first time in Berlin, the altar was surrounded by benches on three sides . Georg Meistermann designed the grisaille glazing .

In addition to the church , the building complex had smaller extensions that also had a square floor plan. This was a chapel that was directly connected to the church and had to be crossed to enter it. The confessional was also here . The chapel was originally intended to be a memorial for the victims of National Socialism. Since the Maria Regina Martyrum church already existed as a memorial church, the chapel was consecrated to the mother of Jesus . On the opposite side it was through a porch with the sacristy connected. The campanile stood directly on the street and was designed as a gate. Its bell chamber was clad all around with wooden slats.
