History, description and equipment

Old church

The church is a late Romanesque building from the 13th century. It consists of the nave , the transept and the choir in the basement of the church tower . The church tower is four-story and has a Welsche dome . In 1508 the windows were changed into pointed arches . The sacristy was built in the post-Gothic period and in 1972 had to make way for the connecting passage to the new church. In 1923 the nave was extended. The high altar is crowned by an equestrian statue of St. George . The high altar figures of St. Urban and St. Ottilie can now be found in the new church, as well as a carrying figure of St. Mary around 1770. A Virgin Mary from around 1440 is attached to the west gallery. Also to be mentioned are the grave monuments for Dorothea († 1524) and Albrecht von Thüngen († 1533). The old church has stood empty since the new church was built and was made fit for use again by extensive restoration by 2006.

New Church

The new church was built from 1973 to 1974 under the architect Erwin van Aaken . A glazed connecting corridor leads from it to the choir of the old church. The new building is built on a square floor plan and has a shifted tent roof with a point over the altar . It has large wall areas, broken up by six art-glazed windows. The altar stands on a cross-shaped altar island. A bronze tabernacle by Josef Ruppert from Hammelburg is located on the sculptural rear wall . The organ taken over from the old church was restored in 2016.

Peal

The chime contains two very old bells. It sounds in the Gloria motif.
