from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Church of St. Jacobi in the Seehausen district of Bremen , Seehauser Landstrasse 168, is the parish church of the Evangelical Lutheran community and one of the oldest Gothic sacred buildings in the Hanseatic city .

history

St. Jacobi

The Seehausen parish formed a community with Hasenbüren and was first mentioned in a document in 1187. The village church was built after the Stedinger War in the 13th century and consecrated to the Apostle James . According to the parish, the year of construction is 1234, another source gives an estimate of 1250. Client and church patronage lay with the Counts of Hoya . In 1523, Count Jobst II von Hoya confessed to Luther's teachings . After the dynasty of the counts died out in 1582, the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg , later the Electorate of Hanover, became a liege lord, and Seehausen remained Lutheran.

The simple Jakobikirche was probably built in the Gothic style on the terp of a house destroyed in the Stedinger War or on the property of an old castle. The brick village church has a three-axis nave , covered by a simple, high pitched roof . The six arched windows structure the facade. The retracted, straight choir has two east windows. A very massive, square, three-storey west tower with a tent roof and a south portal connects directly to the ship. According to two inscriptions, a first renovation took place in 1637 and another one in 1797.

Around 1848 there was a parish school next to the church with two classes and 136 students. In 1854 a new building replaced the old school, which was expanded by one class in 1878 and another class in 1880 for 178 students.

The church was restored in 1889. As a result, the choir and nave were changed both inside and outside.

Interior

Inside, the roof beams have been partially visible since 1889. A remarkable small winged altar in the choir, from a Dutch school, dates from the 16th century. It shows representations of the Lord's Supper , the Annunciation , the Crucifixion and the Ascension as well as the apostles Peter and Paul . The community has a Bible from 1579. The church bell is from 1406.

organ

The organ from 1963 comes from Alfred Führer . It has two manuals , a large pedal and 12 registers .

graveyard

In the Evangelical Lutheran cemetery, which is still occupied, there are gravestones from the 17th and early 18th centuries.
