St. Jakob and Leonhard (Abbey)
The parish church of St. Jakob and Leonhard is a Roman Catholic sacred building in the Abtei municipality in South Tyrol . It is located in the district of St. Leonhard ( San Linêrt in Ladin ) and is dedicated to the Apostle James and St. Leonhard . According to Karl Gruber, it is one of the most beautiful and noble baroque church buildings in the diocese .
history
Today's baroque church was built on the site of an older sacred building, consecrated in 1347, of which only the Gothic tower remained. It was built between 1776 and 1778 and is the work of the master builder Franz Singer . The consecration was made on July 11, 1782 by Bishop Joseph von Spaur . Restoration work was carried out around 1875.
Building description
The church is a large two-bay rectangular building with a detached choir . A sacristy and the laterally offset 52 m high tower are attached to the front . Inside and outside it is characterized by typical baroque ornaments . The fresco decoration comes from Matthäus Günther .
