The Church of St. Jakobus the Elder is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Glane district of Bad Iburg in Lower Saxony. The hall church was built in the neo-Gothic style.

history

The first church building in Glane was a small church, which was first mentioned in 1088. It was probably a half-timbered building that was rebuilt and expanded several times. A larger new building was erected in the middle of the 14th century on the site of today's St. James Church and consecrated in 1356 under the patronage of the Apostle James the Elder . This church burned down on May 19, 1875 after lightning struck the steeple. The church, which was built as a replacement from 1876 to 1878, had such major structural defects that it was closed in 1885. The congregation moved to an emergency church built in the same year. On May 29, 1904, the foundation stone for the neo-Gothic hall church was laid. It was consecrated on July 12, 1905. The plans come from Wilhelm Sunder-Plaßmann .

The church was laid out with three aisles with five bays and was made of hewn sandstone. The tower, 68 meters high on a square base, has an octagonal helmet with four pyramid points at the four corners. The five bronze bells were cast by the bell foundry Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock from Gescher in 1948, after the previous bells had been melted down to a measuring bell in the First and Second World Wars.

The vaults of the central nave are painted with floral ornaments, the capitals of the eight sandstone columns with stylized acanthus leaves. The colored windows show representations of saints.

In 2009 the church was redesigned. The altar was moved closer to the nave due to the decreasing number of church visitors. In its place the baptismal font was set up. The church received a new confessional. On the walls of the aisles, blue-gray insulation panels were attached below the windows to improve the acoustics, on which the pictures of the Way of the Cross were hung. In addition, the vaulted ceiling was repainted.

Furnishing

The oldest piece of equipment in the church is a Gothic Pietà , which was created around 1420 in the workshop of an unknown sculptor from Westphalia. It was restored in 1987. Since then it has been colored again in the Baroque style. The statue of James the Elder dates from the first half of the 17th century.

The high altar shows the risen Christ and the apostles Peter, John, Philip, Andrew, Matthias and Paul. The wood carvings are the work of the sculptor Werner Bruning from Mesum . Around 1990 he also created the sculpture of the Apostle Thomas on the west wall of the church for the church.

The simple community altar made of travertine was created in 1970 by the Osnabrück sculptor Walter Mellmann (1910–2001), when the interior was redesigned according to the Sacrosanctum Concilium of the Second Vatican Council . Following the liturgical reform, Mellmann's travertine ambo also dates from this year . For the church Mellmann also made the tabernacle , the altar cross and the baptismal font from travertine, the bronze lid of which carries a dove with outspread wings, symbolizing the Holy Spirit. His bronze statue of the Virgin Mary dates from 1972. In 1980 Werner Mellmann created the statue of Saint Anthony of Padua for the church out of oak. It is located on the west wall of the rear part of the church.

With the sculpture of the patron saint of the church, James the Elder, and the sculpture of Saint Isidore , the church has two works by the Glane-born sculptor and professor Heinrich Pohlmann (1839–1917).

From the workshop of the Mayer'schen Hofkunstanstalt in Munich come two sculptures made of wood that were originally colored. There is a Pietà from 1906 and the death of Saint Joseph from 1910.

The 14 Stations of the Cross were made by the sculptor Anton Mormann from Wiedenbrück in 1875. The stations, the shape of which mimics ancient temples, have been in the church since 1906.

The organ was built by the organ building workshop Matthias Kreienbrink in Osnabrück. The prospectus with the crown was carved by the sculptor Heinrich Starmann from Neuenkirchen (Oldb.). The organ was consecrated on March 4, 1973.

To the north of the church is the war memorial that commemorates the fallen residents of the two world wars.
