history

General

A church in Wildenrath was first mentioned in a document in 1118. The deed says that the church in Wildenrath was handed over to the newly founded monastery in Wassenberg . In 1474 the parish received its first pastor. Until then, Wildenrath was looked after from Wassenberg. It can be assumed that the place belonged as a branch to the parish Wassenberg until the 15th century and only then became independent.

Since January 1, 2013 Wildenrath is no longer an independent parish. The parish was merged with some other former parishes to form the parish of St. Martin Wegberg. Since then, St. Johann Baptist has been a branch church of this new large parish.

Church building

The original Wildenrath church, which was probably of Romanesque origin, became too small in the middle of the 19th century. A new building was then erected elsewhere between 1850 and 1851 according to plans by Theodor August Stein , but initially without a bell tower . This was added in 1894. The original church existed until 1873 and was used as a school until then and was finally demolished.

The neo-Romanesque church from 1850/51 was demolished at the beginning of the 1960s except for the tower. Today's church was built in the same place between 1964 and 1965 according to plans by the Erkelenz architect Josef Viethen , including the bell tower.

architecture

St. Johann Baptist is a post-war modern basilica with an east-west orientation. In the middle of the just closed choir is a rectangular niche in which the tabernacle is housed. There is a long window on the north and south side of this niche. Otherwise the choir has no windows. In the upper aisle of the central nave there are elongated hexagonal windows and a concrete tracery window extends along the entire length of the aisles. The three-storey bell tower is built in front of the church on the south side. It was built in the neo-Romanesque style and has an octagonal helmet . The sacristy is located on the east side of the south aisle . The entire church is spanned with a flat ceiling. Characteristic building elements are exposed concrete and bricks .

Furnishing

In the interior there is largely modern equipment from the 1960 / 70s. A neo-Romanesque Maria-Hilf altar from the second half of the 19th century and the font from the 12th century were taken over from the previous church. This is located in the baptistery, which was set up in the basement of the tower. The windows were created by Wilhelm de Graaff around 1965. They depict scenes from the New Testament , mostly with reference to the church patron, John the Baptist.

In the tower there are three bells of the Bochum association for cast steel production. They were cast in 1953 and have the beats f ' , as ' and b ' .
