The Church of St. Josef is a Roman Catholic church building in Holzkirchen in Upper Bavaria in the Miesbach district . The new building, which is dedicated to St. Joseph of Nazareth , was built from 2016.

Today the church belongs to the parish association Holzkirchen-Warngau in the deanery Miesbach, in the south region of the archdiocese of Munich and Freising .

Old building

In the same place stood the St. Joseph's Church, built between 1961 and 1962 and consecrated on June 24, 1962, which was also called “God's Tent” because of its roof shape. The architect was Franz Ruf .

On November 24, 2011, the church was closed due to structural defects and the risk of collapse. Redevelopment plans failed for economic reasons, so that the church was profaned in 2012 and resigned in summer 2014. The bell tower remained.

New building

According to the design by the Munich architect Eberhard Wimmer, two obtuse or inclined cones form the church and the weekday chapel, based on the model of the moraine hill and the nearby alpine silhouette . The shape also matches the church tower. A flat roof construction creates the connection between the two differently sized structures. The cone construction of the church was made from horizontal two-part wooden rings with steel inserts and laminated veneer lumber. The roofing consists mainly of wooden shingles. Inside the church building, the view through the shape of the truncated cones should automatically be guided into the light. The concept of liturgy and the church of the Second Vatican Council is largely implemented through the central arrangement of the altar .

On March 18, 2016, the foundation stone of the new St. Josef Church was laid. The Archbishop of Munich and Freising, Reinhard Marx , consecrated the church on March 18, 2018. Almost a year later, the church received a special prize from the Bavarian Timber Construction Prize 2018 for its “extraordinary design language and materiality” and the “impressive spatial quality”.

organ

The Frenger Organ

After its completion in 1962, the parish church was initially equipped with a used organ . In 1984 it was moved to the old parish church of St. Laurentius. St. Josef received a new instrument from the Münchner Orgelbau company under the direction of Wilhelm Stöberl . This was equipped with mechanical action mechanisms and electrical stop action mechanisms. It comprised 25 stops on two manuals and a pedal . In addition to the normal coupling , it received a coupling manual. In the course of the new church building, a new organ was built by Orgelbau Frenger from Bruckmühl . With the exception of the prospectus , as many components as possible were taken from the old organ. Accordingly, the disposition is almost the same. It has only been expanded to include the Violon 16 'pedal register and the sub-octave couplings. The new organ was used for the first time during the consecration of the church on March 18, 2018. It now has 26 sounding registers. In contrast to the old church, the organ in the new building is at ground level, as it does not have a gallery .
