St. Joseph is the Catholic parish church of Gronau in the Lower Saxony district of Hildesheim , it is located at Burgstrasse 8 and is named after Josef von Nazaret . Your parish of the same name belongs to the Deanery Alfeld-Detfurth in the Diocese of Hildesheim .

Building description

From the outside, St. Joseph is a simple hall church with a roof turret and a flat, rounded end on the altar side in the north. The church, which is around 78 meters above sea level , blends inconspicuously into the alignment of the Burgstrasse.

The interior of the church surprises with a completely preserved baroque interior of high quality. The high altar with a painting of Mary's engagement to Joseph is flanked by two side altars, behind which are the choir stalls . The altars are richly decorated with paintings, statues and carvings from a theological and hagiographic point of view. You can see scenes from the life of the patron saint , St. Joseph , as well as numerous saints, especially of the Dominican order . The walls are structured with stucco moldings and pilasters . On Gewölbegurt between the chancel and nave is the eye of God to see with the chronogram Devs CertVs Aspector Mevs ( "God looks at me with a sure eye"; 1715).

To the east of the church around a rectangular inner courtyard are the large former monastery buildings, which today serve as the rectory, community rooms and the location of the Oskar Kämmer School .

history

The Gronau Josephskirche was built in 1710 with the dual function of a monastery church for the Dominican convent built in 1680 and a parish church for the Catholics of Gronau and the surrounding area. The background was the restoration of the Great Hildesheim pen in 1643, while not allowed the bishop as sovereign, his now Lutheran to subjects re-catholicize , but probably led to the establishment of Catholic "reference points". The monastery was secularized in 1815 , and the parish had independent “daughters” in the following years, several of whom have recently returned to their mother. In 1958 the Deanery Gronau was merged with the Deanery Alfeld, and the new Dean's office became Alfeld.

Since December 1, 2002, the church has belonged to the then newly established Deanery Alfeld-Detfurth, the Deanery Alfeld-Gronau was canceled in this context. Since November 1, 2006, the Gronau parish of St. Joseph has also included the churches of St. Petrus zu den Ketten in Elze, St. Benedikt in Lauenstein and St. Marien in Mehle . The churches of Mary Queen of the Apostles in Coppenbrügge and St. Joseph in Eitzum, which have also been part of the parish since November 1, 2006 , were profaned on June 9, 2012 and October 25, 2013, respectively .
