St. Korbinian is a Roman Catholic church at Valleystraße 24 in Munich 's Untersendling district . It is the only church in the city of Sankt Korbinian , the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising , consecrated.

The east facade of the monumental, two- tower neo - baroque building , which was completed in 1926 after a two-year construction period, forms the west side of Gotzinger Platz . It has been crowned by a large group of crucifixions since 1950, which was erected on a balustrade between the bell houses of the flanking 55 meter high towers above the ridge point of the free gable that ends in a horizontal line .

Building history

The first construction and its destruction

The building was built according to plans by the architect Hermann Buchert . The groundbreaking ceremony for the new building took place on September 17, 1924, and on November 23, 1924, Cathedral Chapter Dr. Schauer laid the foundation stone, and the topping-out ceremony was celebrated on September 17, 1925.

Due to limited funds, a discussion arose as to whether the church should be completed without towers or only halfway as an emergency church. “It is only thanks to the whole energy of the pastor (J. Rauscher) that the parish had to give way and the building could be completed. In the end it was all about the towers. There was still an amount of 66,000 marks to be raised. The cathedral chapter took over the guarantee. ”Wrote Prelate Dr. Hartig on a church tour from 1941.

So the construction could be completed. The consecration of the bells took place on October 10, 1926, and the church was consecrated by Cardinal Michael von Faulhaber , then Archbishop of Munich, on October 17, 1926 .

In the air raid on Munich on July 12, 1944, the church was almost completely destroyed by explosive bombs and fire, only the lower church remained intact. However, since this did not offer space for all the worshipers, the Holy Mass was celebrated in the open air in the bombed-out church room, if the weather allowed it.

reconstruction

inner space

The reconstruction began in 1949 and was largely completed in 1951 with the installation of a somewhat smaller organ than the old one . In 1952 the church was inaugurated again with a big festival. In the same year a new Easter candlestick , the tabernacle and four candlesticks as well as the pulpit with the four evangelists , and in December the Madonna on the side altar were acquired. In June 1953 the new choir stalls were installed and two months later the Pietà was set up in the war memorial chapel .

The gable cross was consecrated and placed on January 5, 1950. The work for the design of the choir, which had to be paid for by the parish itself (15,000 DM), was awarded to the Müller company from Maillingerstraße. Concerning the design of the main nave, Rev. Schuller reports the following:

“The architect's original plan, as it is also laid down in the model, did not meet with the approval of the entire parish, especially with regard to the ceiling design. [...] Now the painter Holzner Richard was given the task of applying the ceiling painting in its first form. In August Holzner started this work in connection with the Müller company, Maillingerstraße construction business, and is now doing the ceiling painting in frescoes with the support of the painter Hufner, Obermenzing. Altars

On September 15, 1951, three altars were consecrated under Auxiliary Bishop Karl Scharnagel . The main altar was consecrated to the title of the church patron Saint Korbinian , the side altar on the Gospel side to the title of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary ( protective cloak Madonna ), and the side altar on the epistle side to the title of Saint Michael the Archangel and all Holy Angels . Relics of the martyrs Martialis and Viktor von Xanten were buried under all three altars in the martyr's grave.

fresco

The entire slightly vaulted ceiling of the nave is adorned with a huge fresco by the painter Richard Holzner from 1951. The fresco is the largest ceiling painting in Munich and shows in neo-baroque style miracles and scenes from the life of St. Korbinian (including the fermenting wine, Korbinian tames a bear, Korbinian preaches in his little monastery, Korbinian receives fish through a miracle, the Stephanuskirche shines in heavenly splendor, Korbinian is awarded a miter and pallium, Korbinian is forced to come from Mais to Freising, Korbinian awakens a spring).

organ

The organ was built in 1985 by Wilhelm Stöberl. It has 25 stops on two manuals and a pedal . In 2003 it was renovated by the organ building company Münchner Orgelbau Johannes Führer. Before that, the organ of Munich's Old Main Synagogue , which the Archbishop's Ordinariate bought before it was forcibly demolished, was installed. It was bombed in 1944.

Bells

Korbinians Bell

Five bells hang in the bell towers . In 1926, Rudolph Oberascher cast three bells in Munich in the tones of 1 , Eb 1 and Gb 1 . On July 5, 1959, the parish received four new bells after the old one was destroyed in World War II . The bells were consecrated by cathedral priest Karl Abenthum. The entire ringing, including the scaffolding and bell cage structures as well as the electric bell system, cost more than 80,000 DM at that time. The new bells were hung in the two towers on July 5, 1959, with the large Korbinians bell hanging alone in the south tower as one of the largest bells in the city. Bells 5 to 2 hang on cranked steel yokes in the north tower, bell 1 hangs on the straight steel yoke and swings across the nave. On Saturdays at 3 p.m., Sunday is rung in with the north tower bells. They also ring the bell for the main service. In both cases, the big bell is rung at high festivities.
