St. Laurentius is a Catholic parish church in Ennigerloh - Westkirchen in the Warendorf district , North Rhine-Westphalia . The neo-Gothic church was built from 1868 to 1871 according to plans by the Münster architect August Hanemann .

Structurally, the church and parish belong to the Beckum deanery in the Münster diocese . Together with St. Jakobus , St. Mauritius and St. Margaretha the parish forms a pastoral care unit.

history

In 1193, the Freckenhorst monastery was commissioned by Bishop Hermann II von Katzenelnbogen to build a church between Freckenhorst and Ostenfelde in order to shorten the routes of the faithful. At the beginning of the 12th century, the first church was built, which was already consecrated to St. Lawrence . The parish, founded in 1276, was initially referred to as "Westeren-Ostenfelde" (= "West-Ostenfelde"). It was not until 1337 that the name Westkirchen was first documented as "Westkerken".

A second parish church was consecrated in 1529 by Auxiliary Bishop Bernhardus Sasse . When this was dilapidated, it was demolished in 1799.

Then the third church was built in 1809 and 1810. It burned down in the great village fire in July 1868.

The fourth, today's parish church, a three-aisled hall construction , was consecrated by Bishop Johannes Bernhard Brinkmann on September 28, 1871. In 1969 and 1970 the church was renovated in accordance with the reforms of the Second Vatican Council . The high altar was removed and a round marble altar table was set up. This altar was again replaced in 2003 by a rectangular sandstone altar.

Furnishing

The oldest part of the church is the Sendenhorster baptismal font from the Renaissance . It was made of Baumberger sandstone in 1588 and was a gift from the parish in Sendenhorst to rebuild the church after the village fire. Today it is incorporated into a sandstone octagon .

The choir stalls were created in 1878. After it was removed from the church for some time, it has now been put back up.

The old sacristy is on the south side of the church . After the new building on the north side, it was converted into the weekday and peace chapel. Today it serves as a sacrament chapel. The entrance on the north side was closed and a Lady Chapel was set up there. A Pietà and a depiction of Joseph's death , both from the beginning of the 19th century, are displayed here. A gift from the papal officer Clemens August Eickholt (1844–1919), an icon of Perpetual Aid , was also placed there.

A Fleiter organ rises up on a stage on the west wall of the church . It was renewed and rebuilt in 1971.
