The Roman Catholic Church of St. Mary's Conception - also called Marienkirche - on Oststrasse in the center of Düsseldorf was built between 1894 and 1896 according to plans by the Mainz cathedral builder Ludwig Becker . It was designed in the style of a cathedral and is a typical example of Rhenish neo-Gothic .

history

When the parish of Süd-Pempelfort was branched off from the Derendorfer parish, it was decided to build a new church. A public competition was announced for this, in which the design by architect L. Becker was awarded first prize. The St. Mary's Conception Church (Marienkirche) was built from 1894 to 1896 according to Becker's designs.

From 1932 until his arrest by the Gestapo in 1936, Joseph Cornelius Rossaint was chaplain at the Marienkirche; a plaque on the portal commemorates him. The church was badly damaged in an air raid during World War II in 1943.

The reconstruction lasted from 1950 to 1969, the architect was Josef Lehmbrock from Düsseldorf. From 1976 to 1982 a restoration took place under the architect Friedrich Wilhelm Dahmen , who brought the interior closer to the original structure.

On January 1, 2011, the parish of St. Mary's Conception merged with the parishes of St. Lambertus and St. Maximilian to form the parish of St. Lambertus Düsseldorf .

In Advent 2014, the Franciscans left their old monastery on Immermannstrasse and the corner of Oststrasse. They moved from the neighboring Franciscan monastery of St. Antonius , which was later demolished, to the building of the Marienkirche - St. Mary's Conception, where they live in a fraternity .

Br. Firminus Wickenhäuser , who died in the call of holiness and whose bones had rested in the crypt of the old monastery church for decades, was transferred to St. Mary's Church in a solemn procession at the beginning of 2015.

The demolition work on the old and dilapidated old monastery site began on July 13, 2017 and has been completed. This marked the end of the 164-year history of the Franciscan monastery on Immermannstrasse and the corner of Oststrasse.

Building description

The church building with a high main and two low side aisles has two hexagonal main towers. These are presented to the aisles on the west side. A chapel is attached to the last two fields of the side aisles.

Between the twin towers there is a “spacious vestibule” on the outside and the organ stage on the inside.

The church building is a three-aisled basilica with "wide-spreading transept wings". The high choir is provided with a gallery. An independent building, which houses the sacristy and a meeting room, adjoins this passage of the main choir on the south side.

In addition to the high choir, the church building also has “four side choirs arranged like a chapel wreath”.

Furnishing

The furnishings from 1896 included the high altar and the confessional by Friedrich Wilhelm Mengelberg . The Düsseldorf sculptor Anton Josef Reiss created the figurative decorations in St. Mary's Church, including the cross above the altar and the Madonna. Together with his student Alexander Iven , he created the Way of the Cross in the St. Mary's Conception Church in Düsseldorf. Seven windows depicting the seven sorrows of Mary were made by the Cologne-Lindenthal glass painting company Schneider and Schmolz . The equipment was destroyed in World War II. In 1962/1963, large concrete and glass windows by Günter Grote were installed.
