St. Mary's Visitation (Warburg Old Town)
St. Mariä Visitation is a Catholic parish church in the old town of Warburg in the district of Höxter , North Rhine-Westphalia . Structurally, the church and parish belong to the pastoral association Warburg Stadt und Land in the Höxter deanery of the Archdiocese of Paderborn .
history
A document from May 1287 testifies to a dispute over the former parish church of St. Maria in vinea , which the bishop had assigned to the Dominicans . Bishop Otto von Rietberg promised to build a new church with baptism rights. In September 1290, he therefore sold his lower courtyard in the city to the citizens in order to create a building site. After the old town parish had been merged with the parish of St. Petri auf der Hüffert in 1287 , the bishop separated these two again in July 1297. Therefore it can be assumed that the parish church then existed. Hagemann names June 19, 1299 as the consecration day .
In 1429 a sacristy was built north of the choir , which is now used as the Lady Chapel. In 1833 parts of the vault collapsed. A three-part window on the south portal was broken into in the 19th century. In 1899/1900 the church tower was increased by one floor with a walkway and received the eight-sided top. In 1947 today's sacristy was built south of the choir. 1974 to 1975 the church was extensively renovated under the direction of the architect Heinrich Stiegemann from Warstein.
architecture
The church is a three-aisled two-bay hall church . A choir with a 5/8 end adjoins the central nave to the east . The side aisles are closed by side choirs closed on three sides. The west tower extends to the middle of the west yoke in the central nave.
The tower hall to the west is low and is spanned by a square groin vault. The separating belts run towards a central support.
Furnishing
The rosary altar was built around 1700. The retable rests on a simple base that surrounds the cafeteria . The altarpiece is framed by winding columns and crowned by a final cornice. In addition, there are figures of Saints Erasmus and Nicholas . The altarpiece shows how Mary, floating on clouds, presents a rosary to Saint Dominic . On the other hand, the baby Jesus gives Saint Catherine of Siena a wreath of floral roses.
In front of the tower hall there is a colored baptismal font from 1620. The chalice is six-sided. The sides are framed by fluted pilasters and a final bulge. There are reliefs in it that show the Assumption of Mary into heaven and the four evangelists .
The figures include a Pietà , a Radiant Madonna and depictions of the Saints Joseph, Sebastian, Anna Selbdritt, Katharina and Barbara.
organ
In 2000 the church received a new organ, which was built by the organ builder Sandtner . The instrument has 33 stops on two manuals and a pedal . The first manual serves as a coupling manual. The Spieltrakturen are mechanically, the Registertrakturen electrically.
