Church of St. Maria Magdalena in Braunschwende

The Evangelical Church of St. Maria Magdalena is in Braunschwende , a district of the city of Mansfeld in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt . It belongs to the parish area Wippra in the parish of Eisleben-Sömmerda the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

history

The main attraction of Braunschweig is the church of St. Maria Magdalena, which was built by the Stauch brothers from Lutherstadt Eisleben according to plans by the royal Prussian master builder Johann Christian Huth from Halberstadt, instead of the previous building that had burned down. The church was consecrated in 1787.

Before the Reformation

Braunschwende was a Catholic parish church within the County of Wippra and after it was released it came to the Rammelburg Office of the County of Mansfeld . The namesake of the church was Maria Magdalena . After the Reformation in the 1530s, the patronage was no longer used and was not revived until the end of the 20th century.

Previous construction

Due to its old age and dilapidation, the medieval church of St. Maria Magdalena in Braunschwende was close to collapse. In coordination with the Office of Rammelburg and the pastor of Braunschwend and Wippra, Magister Johann Gotthard Rhäsa, the Eisleben consistory signed a contract on September 20, 1777 with Johann George Stauch, a building inspector from the Princely Anhalt region of Bernburg, on the construction of a new church in Braunschwende. The assumption made on the website of the city of Mansfeld that the current church was built in the 14th or 15th century cannot be confirmed. One day after Easter in 1778, the complete demolition of the old church in Braunschwende began in order to have it rebuilt from scratch . The shell of the new church in Braunschwende was completed on Christmas Eve 1778, as stipulated in the contract with the Bernburg building inspector Stauch. Oak and fir wood, among other things, served as building material, the masonry work was done by two master masons from Harzgerode and Sangerhausen .

First new building

The church building was approved in spring 1780 by Dr. Johann Gottlob Benjamin Pfeil, bailiff from Rammelburg, the superintendent Johann Andreas Müller from Eisleben and the former royal Prussian master builder Büring. But the pastor Rhäse refused to pay the remaining 150 thalers to the building inspector Stauch, with whom he had fallen out, according to the contract. The pastor was only able to enjoy his new church for a few days, because a fire destroyed half the village of Braunschwende on September 14, 1780, including the newly built church and the village school. The church tower had collapsed due to the heat, only the outer walls of the nave were still standing. Due to an emergency roof that was erected, the service could only be held in the ruins of the church in the following months.

Second new building

A new building was necessary. The building inspector Stauch was no longer available, as he had meanwhile been appointed as the master builder at the court in Köthen (Anhalt) and the pastor and parish of Braunschwende still owed him 150 thalers. Out of compassion for those who had burned down, he forgave them 50 thalers of this debt.

In 1784, the master builder Johann Christian Huth from Halberstadt delivered cracks for the new construction of the church with the tower on the east side of the building and including the old church walls. The construction work was in the hands of the Stauch brothers from Eisleben. On January 7, 1787 the consecration of the new churches could take place.

Interior

While the altar and pulpit of the new building from 1778/80 came from Johann George Stauch and fell victim to the fire in 1780, the interior of today's church dates from the first half of the 19th century.

Church bells

The church bell was purchased in the 1790s because the old bell had melted in the fire of 1780.

Monument protection

The Church of St. Maria Magdalena is included in the list of cultural monuments in Mansfeld under registration number 094 65313 as cultural monuments of the community of Mansfeld in the monument register of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, which is based on the Monument Protection Act of October 21, 1991 by the State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology Saxony-Anhalt and has been continuously updated since then.
